Name: Cheerfulness
Italian Name: Allegria
Playing Card: 9♣
Polarity when Upright: Positive
Core Meanings: Satisfaction, Cheerfulness, Positivity, Celebration | Social groups | Material well-being | Entertainment, Eating and drinking, Bottoms up
Polarity when Reversed: Negative
Reversed Core Meanings: Excess, Addiction | Sadness, Dejection | Setbacks, Unforeseen obstacles

Card Description: three men celebrating with wine outside a tavern.

Suit and Number: Nines represent the idea of bonding. The suit of Clubs interprets the basic idea as social bonding, signifying one’s social circle, and bonding over happy events.

UPRIGHT 9♣

General: an extremely positive card which represents the idea of celebration and all those circumstances that bring people together to celebrate. There is a strong social component to this card.

Love and Relationships: it often shows that hard times are over and that it’s time to relax and enjoy the ride. It heralds smooth periods where nothing troubles the couple particularly. When a breakup has happened in the near past, the card shows reconciliation, while if it’s been a while it shows satisfaction in love, presumably with someone else. It can show dates and taking part in mundane events together. It’s a card of friendship, but not a deep friendship as that shown by the Nine of Hearts. The Nine of Clubs always has a sense of carefreeness about it, implying that the bond may not survive if the going gets tough.

Work and Money: extremely positive, the Nine of Clubs is a card of material satisfaction. It means not having to worry about money and making ends meet, advancement and positive ties leading to success. It shows lines of work having to do with eating, drinking and entertaining the public. It is also a positive card for those playing the lottery and other games of chance.

Other: psychologically it’s a card of mirth, letting go of hurt and assuming a more positive, self-confident attitude. It signifies groups of people, traditionally living in the countryside, but this is no longer necessarily the case nowadays. The card is also a significator for well-meaning jokes.

Important Combinations:
9♣ + 10♣ = a joke or prank | a social butterfly
9♣ + 5♣ + 6♣ = winning money
9♣ + K♦ = realization at work
9♣ + 2♥ = a house party | a pub or restaurant
9♣ + 8♣ = a reunion with friends

REVERSED 9♣R

General: if upright it meant cheerfulness, luck and celebration, when reversed, the Nine of Clubs is connected with all forms of excess, with sorrow and with setbacks and misfortunes marring all initiatives.

Love and Relationships: relationships tend to dissolve or be problematic. It shows people who are not ready to celebrate the querent, or if they do, they don’t really mean it. It is a card of bullying, mobbing and all those negative behaviors that can be misconstrued as “just kidding”, but they are really malicious. Partners may be overbearing and caustic.

Work and Money: setbacks and bad luck are the chief meanings of this card. It can also imply foolish mistakes that may end up costing the querent dearly. More broadly, it points to material loss and difficulties with money.

Other: psychologically it represents an unstable character. It points to either sorrow and depression or an unhinged loose cannon.

Important Combinations:
9♣R + J♠ or Q♠ + 10♣ = malicious practical jokes and pranks
9♣R + 9♦ + 9♠ = addiction
9♣R + K♦ = traditionally, false banknotes, but many other possibilites apply depending on the context
9♣R + 2♣ = kicking and addiction
9♣R + 7♠ = material loss

Vera Sibilla | Nine of Hearts – Faithfulness (Fedeltà)

Name: Faithfulness
Italian Name: Fedeltà
Playing Card: 9♥
Polarity when Upright: Positive
Core Meanings: Triumph in love | Deep attachment, Strong feelings and commitment | Loyalty in all its forms | Friendship, Help
Polarity when Reversed: Negative
Reversed Core Meanings: Unfaithfulness | Rebellion, Audacity, Unruly person | all is not as it seems

Card Description: a dog guards its master’s tent while he is away.

Suit and Number: All nines in the Vera Sibilla are connected to the idea of, well, connection, linkage, bond. In the Nine of Hearts the idea of bond is a positive one.

UPRIGHT 9♥

General: this card is the polar opposite of the Four of Diamonds, Falsehood. It represents all things that truly are as they seem, appearances corresponding to reality. It’s the card of loving commitment, success, support and deep attachment.

Love and Relationships: in relationship readings this is one of the most positive cards. It indicates people who are loyal, transparent, supportive, genuinely caring. In itself this is a card of friendship, but in love it shows an unshakable bond. When it describes a couple’s life, the Nine of Hearts signifies strong commitment and mutual dependability and synergy. When found among negative cards that show the dying off of feelings, it can represent that the people involved still deeply respect each other and their commitment, and probably remain together out of loyalty. When with cards that show ill will, lying, etc. The Nine of Hearts becomes negative, its meaning negated by the influence of the cards around.

Work and Money: it shows trustworthy colleagues and advisors. Offers are usually good or at least honest, unless other cards contradict this point. The Faithfulness card signifies strong commitment and a positive work environment, as well as the presence of help in time of need. It can imply recognition and having people who look up to you.

Other: psychologically it’s a card of loyalty to something, whether it be a person, an institution, an ideal, etc. It also indicates having a sixth sense for something, however it may apply. Spiritually, in addition to devotion and devotional work, it shows spiritual protectors, otherwise known as angels or spirit guides.

Important Combinations:
9♥ + A♣ = marriage of love
9♥ + 4♣R = a friend’s help
6♦R + 9♥ + J♦ = spiritually, messages from your angel
9♥ + 4♦ = lies
A♥ + 9♥ = truthfulness | spilling your guts | saying I love you | a united group

REVERSED 9♥

General: when reversed, the Nine of Hearts signifies disloyalty, cheating, an untrustworthy character and rebellion, or one who is not tame

Love and Relationships: it is mostly a card of unfaithfulness, and it’s meaning is very similar to when the upright card is surrounded by negative cards. Even when it doesn’s show cheating, it points to lack of respect, having lost the other person’s esteem, and in general all those situations where two people can’t stand each other anymore. It often points lack of success in all endeavors connected with love, it can bring about a separation and it shows that people’s true motives are to be questioned.

Work and Money: it is one of those cards that signify lack of support at best, at worst people whose judgment the querent should not trust, for they are only following their self-interest.

Other: psychologically it is a card of rebellion, anarchy, desertion, the desire for independence (in the context of mundane affairs, it can even represent a country’s independence from another country). Spiritually it shows failure, lack of respect for traditions and lack of contact with one’s guide.

Important Combinations:
9♥R + 3♦ + 9♠R = an offer better avoided
9♥R + 4♥R = cheating
9♥R + K♠ = divorce
9♥R + 7♠ = breakup
9♥R + J♣ or Q♣ + 7♦R = can be a teenager going through a rebellious phase

Vera Sibilla | Eight of Spades – Desperation and Jealousy (Disperato per Gelosia)

Name: Desperation and Jealousy
Italian Name: Disperato per Gelosia*
Playing Card: 8♠
Polarity when Upright: Negative
Core Meanings: Desperation, Crisis, Hopes falling through | Jealousy, Envy, Possessiveness | Loss | Ill-will, Toxicity
Polarity when Reversed: Negative
Reversed Core Meanings: Egotism | Pride | Imbalanced Character | Disruption, Accident | Imbalanced behavior

Card Description: a man leans against a rock as he is about do something from which there is no return. He seems to have r eached a point of no return.

Suit and Number: all eights have to do with balance. In the Suit of Spades, which is negative, this translates as a crisis of a state of affairs, loss of balance, scraping the bottom, etc. All other eights show the realization of hopes, the creation (or re-creation) of a balanced state of affairs and good perspectives. Here we have the opposite: life stands still on the brink of destruction, all balance lost (notice how the man leans on a rock for support).

UPRIGHT 8♠

General: one of the most NSFW cards in the deck, especially in our world pampered by trigger warnings. It is also one of the most mysterious and ominous-looking. It signifies what it says on the tin: hopelessness, desperation, a crisis, loss and jealousy. It shows all those situations where you find yourself face to face with the ugly truth that sometimes life is shit even if we call it fertilizer.

Love and Relationships: often this card represents jealousy. If it comes up alone, it is lousy, normal jealousy, nothing to get too worked up about. However the Eight of Spades also covers morbid jealousy, envy and all toxic environments where ill will prevails. Thus it is also a significator for gossip and slander. Relationships will devolve into a situation of crisis and hang on the brink of dissolution.

Work and Money: debts, loss and money troubles all around all form the core meaning of this card. Investments are likely to prove disastrous and if the querent is hoping to receive money for whatever reason, he won’t. Anything that is hoped for falls through as a rule, unless cards such as Fortune and the Peacock follow, in which case the hope will be realized when the person had given up on it.

Other: psychologically it represents a very dark period of dejection and loss of hope. It shows the inability to envision a bright future, and living in a state of inner crisis. Spiritually it shows loss of faith and esoterically it points to oppression by evil energies. It goes without saying that the Eight of Spades is connected to self-harm and its extreme forms, if with the appropriate cards.

Important Combinations:
6♥U/R + 8♠ = financial crisis
A♣ + 8♠ = a marriage in a critical moment
8♠ + Q♠ and/or J♠ + 9♦ = ill will from a group of people, mobbing if at work
4♥ + 8♠ = Jealousy
6♦U/R + 8♠ + A♠ + 9♦ = very dark thoughts toward oneself

REVERSED 8♠R

General: Also negative. It can have a similar meaning to the upright counterpart. It also shows accidents, disruptive events (think of the man actually firing the gun) and serious character flaws. Only when the reversed Eight of Spades is followed by positive cards it can signify the end of a crisis.

Love and Relationships: it is one of the cards that can show a breakup. It also represents people you’d be advised to stay away from, because they know no limit in their actions and will go to any length to get what they want, selfish and possibly unhinged, depending on the gravity of the other cards. Groups of people are also likely to harbor ill will toward the querent.

Work and Money: It still brings trouble, crisis and disruption. It can also signifiy that the person cannot be trusted to manage their own money or to make good on their promises.

Other: The reversed Jealousy card is connected with accidents. It is also a card of deep immaturity on a psychological level, showing someone who is proud, selfish and arrogant and thinks only about themselves. It signifies a loose cannon. Because it shows lack of restraint, it is associated eith excesses of all kind and it can point to an unbalanced aura due to a hex.

Important Combinations:
8♠R + 4♦ = traditionally, an accident that leaves you paralyzed in a chair, but two cards are not enough | being completely out of your mind
8♠R + 3♣ + 7♠ = an accident
8♠R + 2♣R = serious character flaws
8♠R + 4♦ + 3♠R + Q♠ = a hex sent by a woman (if J♠ a man)
8♠R + 5♦ = being whiny and capricious

Other combinations: Vera Sibilla | Examples of Combinations – The Eights

* literally “Desperate due to Jealousy”, it has been shortened to just “Jealousy” in some modern decks, but clearly the image represents more than just jealousy. I believe the inventor of the deck was trying to fit two different strands of meanings into one card, that connected to jealousy and that connected to desperation and crisis which is typical of the Eight of Spades in various traditions of divination.

Vera Sibilla | Eight of Diamonds – The Handmaid (Donna di Servizio)

Name: The Handmaid
Italian Name: Donna di Servizio
Playing Card: 8♦*
Polarity when Upright: Positive
Core Meanings: Money coming in | Offer, Gift | Evolution | Work, Career | Elevation, Nobility, Politeness | A woman from work | Trip
Polarity when Reversed: Negative
Reversed Core Meanings: Money going out | Things not received or taken away | Low value, cheapness, not trustworthy | Altercations, Gossips

Card Description: a well-dressed young woman is about to climb a flight of stairs after having been to the market for some errands.

Suit and Number: The eights in the Sibilla are cards of balance and the reaching of it. In the Eight of Diamonds we have the idea of balance of money, money coming (upright followed by positive cards) and going (reversed, or upright followed by negative cards). It also represents progess toward a better station in life, one that conforms better to the querent’s idea of success.

UPRIGHT 8♦

General: this card has a plethora a meanings and can be overwhelming. In the main it is connected to money, things that are offered or given, and to work. It is also a card of important psychological import, and it can be a face card representing a woman (traditionally with dark hair and/or from another city).

Love and Relationships: when it represents a woman, it does not represent a partner or someone the querent is involved with romantically. Relationships represented by this card tend to be peaceful and solid. They evolve toward a better state or equilibrium. Where there might be strife, this card brings peace. It signifies people who are trustworthy and dependable. It shows people who help the querent, or, more materialistically, who make the querent a gift (or to whom the querent makes a gift).

Work and Money: the Eight of Diamonds can be a secondary significator for the querent’s work life (the primary being the King of Diamonds). It is also the card that tells us where money comes from and where it’s headed. Mostly it shows money coming, but it is connected to the flow of cash in general, so pay attention, because, as the image shows, it is also the card of shopping and expenses. It represents employment, usually under someone else. The career of the querent, in career readings, usually evolves for the better and promotions are possible. It can represent a woman wearing a uniform.

Other: the Handmaid is a card that can signify a visit. It also shows a transition from one phase to another, usually for the better. Psychologically and in character readings, it shows nobility and high-mindedness, but with less favorable cards it can signify being dependent from other people and having inferiority complexes. The card is connected to cities other than the querent’s.

Important Combinations:
8♦ + K♠ = money from the authority
8♦ + 5♠ = end of a difficult phase in life
8♦ + 10♣ + 7♠ = it can be money down the drain due to carelessness
8♦ + 3♦ = a gift, a precious offer
8♦ + A♠R = money coming in repeatedly | it can show two jobs, especially if another job card is present such as the K♦ | working hard but to good effect

REVERSED 8♦R

General: a negative card that shows money going out, things taken from or not granted to the querent, and disagreements.

Love and Relationships: relationships are usually trashy and with people of no real worth. This card represents the bum or the slut your parents warned you not to date. It is the card of squabbles, often useless and just due to being stupid. Often it heralds difficulties with neighbors or family members. There is the definite possibility of being cheated on (or, as not every querent is a saint, of cheating) usually for no serious reason (the person doesn’t suddenly fall deeply in love with another).

Work and Money: money tends to slip through the querent’s hands for whatever reason, either because he is not good at managing it or because he is forced to spend it. Career-wise it shows very low positions at best, not being paid at all at worst, and it is usually not the querent’s dream job.

Other: gossip and slander are other meanings of the card. Psychologically, the reversed Eight of Diamonds is a card of pettiness, silliness in the worst sense, and of being a lowlife individual.

Important Combinations:
8♦R + K♠ = loans or help not granted by the authority | tax season rolls by
8♦R + Q♥U/R or J♥U/R = cheap slutty character (the same is true to an extent of all face cards)
8♥R + 3♦ = a cheap trinket
2♥ + 8♦R = litigiousness at home
J♦R + 8♦R = gossip, slander (also with the Q♠)

Other combinations: Vera Sibilla | Examples of Combinations – The Eights

* in some recent versions, the card is swapped with the 3♦, the Gift card. This is a recent innovation which, I believe, was probably due to a printing error. The change does not hamper readings, but I have chosen to follow the traditional order

Vera Sibilla | Eight of Clubs – Reunion (Riunione)

Name: Reunion
Italian Name: Riunione
Playing Card: 8♣
Polarity when Upright: Positive
Core Meanings: Positive development | Meeting | Positive relationships | Reconciliation, Getting back, Recovery, Return
Polarity when Reversed: Negative
Reversed Core Meanings: Breakup, Negative relationships | Doubts, Pangs, Vacillation | Depression

Card Description: a man meets with his beloved in the countryside.

Suit and Number: the eights in the Vera Sibilla a cards of balance and the reaching of balance. In the suit of Clubs, this is interpeted as balanced and positive social interactions, positive developments and, recovery and recuperation.

UPRIGHT 8♣

General: This is known as the reconciliation card. It is also the card of dates and appointments and it signifies positive developments in all areas of life. The core idea you can visualize with this card is that two become one, whether it’s a person who’s away coming back or money you’ve been parted from. There is a sense of re-, the restoration of a former balance.

Love and Relationships: many querents ask about reconciliation with an ex. Of course, the cards are capable of showing reconciliation in more than one way, but this is the card that most often comes up. It signifies getting back toghether with people after a breakup or after not seeing them for a while (a high school reunion, for instance). It is the card of dates and appointments, it signifies positive social interactions, being welcome somewhere, agreements, compromises, getting along fine, etc. Couples who’ve been through a rough patch will get back their mojo. If you ask about a person’s attitude toward you, it is positive and constructive and they are willing to meet you halfway.

Work and Money: often the Eight of Clubs signifies interviews, appointments and similar situations. The surrounding cards will tell you how it goes. At other times it shows a cooperative work enviroment. Money-wise, the card can point to getting back money that is owed you and to positive developments in the field. Careers are often centered around social interaction or they are jobs connected with the countryside.

Other: just as the Eight of Hearts is the card of water, the Eight of Clubs is the card of the land, especially the countryside. It is especially auspicious for court cases, which will be resolved to the querent’s advantage. Psychologically it is a card of constructive behavior, being sociable, feeling welcome and at peace. Spiritually it can show meeting like-minded people and positive developments in general. It’s one of the cards that can signify “two of the same”, such as two jobs, two babies, etc.

Important Combinations:
8♣ + 10♣ = momentary reconciliation, it won’t last
4♠ + 8♣ = healing
2♦ + 8♣ = invitation to a date, interview, etc.
3♥ + 4♥ + 8♣ = reconciliation
K♠ + 8♣ = good resolution of legal and bureaucratic issues

REVERSED8♣R

General: Very negative, though not necessarily of long duration. It heralds misunderstandings, rifts between people, feeling torn, regrets, etc. it also intensifies the negative import of negative cards.

Love and Relationships: A peculiar behavior of the reversed Eight of Clubs is that if reverses the querent’s expectations about social interactions: if you expect a meeting to go well, it goes badly, and vice versa. More often than not, though, it points to canceled meetings, disagreements, disunity among groups of people and feeling unwelcome or not accepted. It can also show the impossibility of a compromise, and it definitely negates a reconciliation.

Work and Money: often this card shows the social side of the issue, pointing to negative work groups, colleges, etc. It also shows money that is lost forever without the possibility of getting it back. It shows someone who doesn’t have the motivation to do what is required of them.

Other: psychologically, the reversed Eight of Clubs is a card of regrets, being torn, indecisive and even a pushover. It is also a card of depression and the inability to react to the environment. It shows lack of adaptability. It is also very bad for legal issues.

Important Combinations:
8♣R + 8♥R = depression
8♣R + A♥R = not getting along with people
8♣R + 7♠ = arguments, breakup
8♣R + K♦ + J♠ + Q♠ = nasty colleagues
8♣R + K♠U/R = loss of a lawsuit

Other combinations: Vera Sibilla | Examples of Combinations – The Eights

Vera Sibilla | Eight of Hearts – Hope (Speranza)

Name: Hope
Italian Name: Speranza
Playing Card: 8♥
Polarity when Upright: Positive
Core Meanings: Hope, Expectation | Optimism, Faith | Ease | Situations clearing up
Polarity when Reversed: Negative
Reversed Core Meanings: Pessimism, Depression, Sadness | Frivolity | Situations going up in smoke

Card Description: a young, bare-chested woman holding on to an anchor and looking confidently into the distance, symbolized by the ocean.

Suit and Number: All eights in the Vera Sibilla deal with balance and the path toward balance. The Eight of Hearts, signifies a positive situation which is balanced in that it corresponds, in reality, to what our dreams are within ourselves, and is also the realization of hopes, and therefore development toward a more balanced situation.

UPRIGHT 8♥

General: Extremely positive in itself, but also rather easily influenced by negative cards coming after it. When it ends a combination, however, it shows that no matter how difficult it seems, it will turn out well, things will clear up.

Love and Relationships: in the main, the card shows positive relationships, where there ease and mutual feelings. It signals smooth interpersonal relationships. It can also signify the realization of romantic hopes. That being said, the Eight of Hearts is also the card of flirts, therefore it shows situations that, while positive, still need a bit of time to develop further. They will, if there are positive cards. Otherwise it shows a flash in the pan, a summertime romance that leads to nothing further (even if it’s winter). This comes from the notion of ease attached to the card, for relationships that are easy tends to be also rather weak.

Work and Money: again, the Hope card is connected to the realization of hopes, to positive developments and to the end of difficult periods. It’s connected to jobs done near or on the water, to jobs to do with faith or psychic skills and to your dream job in general. As far as money is concerned, it shows a relaxed situation, repaid loans and not worrying too much. It is also one of the dignificator cards of investments and liquid assets, because investments need time to develop and yield the hoped for results, and because liquid assets are connected with water.

Other: psychologically it’s a card of optimism. It can show the end of a depression, or, followed by negative cards, the beginning of it due to crushed hopes. Spiritually it’s the card of faith and belief and is also connected to the astral plane of dreams and astral forms. As said, it signifies the water and water places, and is also a card of distance, and may even signify “abroad”.

Important Combinations:
8♥ + 10♣ = a flirt, nothing serious
4♥ + 8♥ = romantic hopes realized
8♥ + 6♥ = positive investment, or getting back loaned money
8♥ + 9♣ = can be having fun on the waterfront, a trip on the beach, etc.
8♥ + 7♠ or 5♠ = disruption of hopes

REVERSED 8♥R

General: Negative. It is, for the most part, the opposite of the upright, or the same as the upright when negative cards surround it. If, when upright, it showed situations clearing up, reversed it shows situations going up in smoke.

Love and Relationships: many traditional combinations allude to this card heralding engagements being called off and the like. This is true, but more broadly the card, when it describes personal relationships, it qualifies them as frivolous in the utmost. It’s also the card of promiscuity and just downright being a slut (regardless of sex). It can also point to dates being called off, being stood up, or hopes of romantic fulfillment being remaining just that, hopes.

Work and Money: plans, contracts, offers, all goes up in smoke. Colleagues are not trustworthy, and investments will probably not yield dividends.

Other: psychologically it’s a card of sadness, pessimism and being down, but in itself it can be a passing thing unless with other cards of similar meaning. Spiritually it shows loss of faith, atheism or satanism (not in the Uncle Setnakt’s sense. Actual satanism). It can point to danger through water.

Important Combinations:
5♦ + 8♥R = depression, deep sadness
8♣ + 8♥R = date or reconciliation going up in smoke
7♥ + 8♥R = contract going up in smoke
8♥R + 2♣ + 5♣ = unhoped for recovery
6♥ + 8♥R = investments down the drain

Other Combinations: Vera Sibilla | Examples of Combinations – The Eights

Vera Sibilla | Seven of Spades – Disaster (Disgrazia)

Name: Disaster
Italian Name: Disgrazia
Playing Card: 7♠
Polarity when Upright: Negative
Core Meanings: Disruption, Breakup, Turbulence, Accidents | All that from the outside disrupts our plans | Aggession, Aggressiveness, Anger, Wrath | Suddenness
Polarity when Reversed: Very Negative
Reversed Core Meanings: Complete Ruin or Downfall | Oppression, Enslavement, Utter Helplessness Slowness, Hesitation, Lack of development, Promising things that don’t grow | Tantrums, Childishness | Gullibility again | Being off to a bad start

Card Description: a building being devastated by a sudden fire or explosion.

Suit and Number: The Sevens in the Sibilla deal with plans and projects. The Seven of Spades represents either the ruination of projects, their disruption from unforeseen events, or it represents aggressive stances, a destructive attitude as opposed to the constructive one of the Seven of Hearts.

UPRIGHT 7♠

General: Almost universally negative, the Disaster card is connected with disruption in all its forms. It represents irrational forces destroying our carefully crafted plans or hopes, or at least forcing us to reconsider some aspects of them. It heralds sudden disturbances in all fields and it is connected with anger. When it comes up with positive cards, especially at the beginning of a row of cards, it show that the positive event will strike us soon and when we least expect it.

Love and Relationships: In the aforementioned case of the card falling with positive cards, it often signifies love at first sight, which completely disrupt the person’s lives or, if the querent is already with someone, sudden positive events for the couple (which will be described by the cards). This is just about the only positive meaning of the card. Otherwise it heralds separations, arguments and much anger. Note that when it falls after a significator card, it shows the person to be easily angered, either in general or within the context of the question, showing them to become potentially violent or abusive. When the card heralds a breakup, it is not always definitive. If cards of reconciliation follow, then the argument will be followed by making up. If it falls with other negative cards, though, it shows the end of the relationship, and the presence of other positive cards will usually show a positive future with someone else.

Work and Money: Needless to say, the Seven of Spades brings bad luck into the life of the querent. It is a card of loss, and represents the failure of projects. Career-wise it can stand for being terminated, especially without notice or without expecting it. It also represents all those things that we must deal with financially that force us to reconsider our plans, such as taxation (which clearly the Sibilla doesn’t see in a very positive light). If you are making plans of any nature, but especially financial plans, you will probably need to consider them carefully before acting them out, because there is a risk of making mistakes that will cause the plan to fail. Careers signified by this card tend to be in connection with taxes, fire, explosives, electricity and danger.

Other: Psychologically, the Seven of Spades is a card of anger, and it represents the inability to step out of your immediate reactions and feelings, but acting rather impulsively on them without stopping to consider, usually with negative or unbalanced results. It is also a card of accidents, but be careful. It is not enough to have the Seven of Spades with a card of travel to represent an accident, especially a serious one. If the other cards in the spread don’t support the interpretation, look for another one (a sudden removal, perhaps?) Because the Disaster card signifies sudden disruption and cuts, it is also the card of surgery. Spiritually it shows negative forces, the punishment of errors or, with positive cards, the end of delusion (usually in a somewhat traumatic fashion).

Important Combinations:

10♣ + 7♠ = carelessness leading to accident
K♠ + 7♠ = loss of a lawsuit, among other things
4♥ + 7♠ = argument, breakup (in itself not necessarily definitive)
7♠ + 2♦ or J♦ = a message that arrives quickly
3♦ + 7♠ = can be the breaking of an object

REVERSED 7♠R

General: brace yourselves, because the reversed Seven of Spades is THE worst card in the deck. There is absolutely nothing positive to be said about it. If, when upright, it signifies the disruption of plans and life by external forces, when reversed it shows the utter victory of those forces on the person. It’s a card of ruination, despotism, slavery, oppression. It’s everything the querent is impotent against.

Love and Relationships: When a breakup is shown by this card, you don’t need any other negative cards in the spread. The relationship is over. Period. Often it shows interpersonal dynamics where one person crushes the other, enslaves them as it were, either literally or figuratively. This varies in degree depending on the other cards, and can range from someone who is somewhat despotic to a literal torturer depending on the situation. If more than a face card shows up near the reversed Disaster card, usually the reversed face cards are the victims, or, alternatively, those closest to cards showing suffering.

Work and Money: Working conditions are likely to be insatisfactory to the utmost degree, and will usually go beyond simple pressure from your superiors. The card stands from unpaid slave work, tyrannical superiors or coworkers and an utterly nasty work environment. All projects fail without any hope under this card, and termination is also likely.

Other: The card signifies one who is completely at the mercy of a despotic power, be it traumas, addictions or other people. Psychologically it shows someone who is unable to get back to their feet. With cards of evil, it shows someone with a very dark soul. Spiritually it shows the triumph of evil forces, and it can signify possessions and dark magic.

Important Combinations:

7♠R + J♣ + 9♦ or 9♣R = a young man slave to an addiction
7♠R + K♦R + 5♦R = work bordering on slave labor
7♠R + Q♦ or K♣ = a tyrannical mother or father
J♥ or Q♥ + 7♠R + 8♠ = a boyfriend or girlfriend who are overbearing due to jealousy

Other Combinations: Vera Sibilla | Examples of Combinations – The Sevens

Vera Sibilla | Seven of Diamonds – Child (Bambino)

Name: Child
Italian Name: Bambino
Playing Card: 7♦
Polarity when Upright: Positive
Core Meanings: A child | A pet | Newness, New things, New ideas, New outlook, New project | Smallness | Gullibility, Simple-mindedness
Polarity when Reversed: Negative
Reversed Core Meanings: Problems with a child or pet | Slowness, Hesitation, Lack of development, Promising things that don’t grow | Tantrums, Childishness | Gullibility again | Being off to a bad start

Card Description: a newly born child sleeping in its cradle.

Suit and Number: Sevens have to do with ideas, projects and such things. In the suit of Diamonds this notion is interpreted to mean new ideas, new projects and new ways of looking at the world. All other meanings derive from this and from the image of the child.

UPRIGHT 7♦R

General: It can be a significator card for a child or a pet, i.e., a “small soul”. More often than not, as few readings revolve around children and animals, it represents newness in all its forms. It is something that has just begun (or will be beginning) and has a future ahead of it (the future completion is represented by the Seven of Clubs, Gratification).

Love and Relationships: Often, the Seven of Diamonds represents new relationships which haven’t yet settled into a routine. This is true for all kinds of personal relationships, including friendships. It goes without saying that it represents a child, usually a boy unless attended by feminine face cards. It is not a good card when the querent asks about a possible reconciliation, as it normally shows new relationships, i.e., relationships with people not from the past. However, if this card is surrounded by cards representing a reconciliation, it can show that the relationship will resume on new, and probably more positive foundations. This is, of course, a rare instance.

Work and Money: Normally it refers to new ventures and new jobs or projects. It is a card of strong creativity, so the querent usually has no problem coming up with new ideas, and has the ability to bring in new perspectives. It shows works connected with children or with pets (not with animals in general, though). With negative cards it often shows inexperience. It can also signify internships, propationary periods and being the new recruit in general.

Other: Psychologically it can stand for simplicity, both in a positive and in a negative sense, according to the surrounding cards. A person signified by the Seven of Diamonds usually dislike artificial things and overly elaborate things, preferring the genuine joy found in small things. Speaking of which, the card can signify something small, although it is an uncommon meaning. When with negative cards it can imply that the querent should stop being naive, because he is likely to be led on or, more simply, to make mistakes based on inexperience. It does, however, show purity of heart, both psychologically and spiritually.

Important Combinations:

7♦ + 4♥ = a new love or the first love
7♦ + 5♥ = traditionally it represents cuddling and kissing (sweet, innocent engagement with the other) but it can mean many other things
7♦ + 4♦ = mistakes caused by inexperience
7♦ + 10♣ = naivety (if 7♦R it’s worse)
7♣ + 7♦ + 8♥ = can be the realization of your childhood dreams, among other things

REVERSED 7♦R

General: when it acts as a significator it points to issues with children or pets. Otherwise, it heralds hesitation, situations that do not develop inspite of the initial promise, and can point to the negative character traits typical of children, even in people who should have grown up by now.

Love and Relationships: Often the card brings slowness to the spread, so in relationship issues it normally signifies that the bond is not developing beyond the initial stage, or that a person is taking forever to make a move. It points to immaturite partners (or querents, of course) who are not ready for a commitment, or a childish crush that leads to nothing further. Children and pets could behave badly or be sick.

Work and Money: Any plans made under the rulership of this card is usually either cursed from the beginning or, if positive cards follow, that it will take much longer than anticipated to bear fruit. Same goes with investments and other money matters, such as getting back loaned money. A person card next to the reversed Child card is unreliable and immature and should not be trusted with your money, not necessarily because they are bad, but they simply haven’t grown up. This is also true for colleagues

Other: the card shows childishness, tantrums, and all other signs of immaturity. Like its upright counterpart, it can still point to gullibility, but in a much more deeply rooted form.

Important Combinations:

7♦R + 2♦ = a delay in the arrival of correspondence
A♥ + 7♦R = hesitancy in opening up | can mean stuttering
7♦R + 5♦ = can signify a childish tantrum among other things
7♦R + 6♠ = very long delay
7♦R + 4♠ = can be a sick child or pet

Vera Sibilla | Seven of Clubs – Gratification (Gran Consolazione)

Name: Gratification
Italian Name: Gran Consolazione (which literally means Great Consolation, but it feels weird as it has nothing to do with being consoled, being far more positive than that)
Playing Card: 7♣
Polarity when Upright: Positive
Core Meanings: Realization, Gratification, Satisfaction | Our sense of security in the world | Recognition, Advancement, Concretization
Polarity when Reversed: Negative
Reversed Core Meanings: Insecurity, Fears | Things not bearing fruit, Hesitation | Demotion

Card Description: A man has fallen asleep and dreams of his realization: money, love (the ring) and recognition (the laurel)

Suit and Number: The sevens all have to do with ideas, plans and projects. The Seven of Clubs represents the realization of one’s projects, their being firmly anchored into the world.

UPRIGHT 7♣

General: One of the most positive cards in the deck. It is not so much a card of luck as one of realization. It is deeply connected with our sense of security in terms of how we conceive of ourselves, and it shows that we manage to embody it in our real life. It shows the attainment of the grat goals we dream of. When this card comes up after bad cards, it is traditionally called the light at the end of the tunnel, showing the regaining of balance and security.

Love and Relationships: In itself, the Seven of Clubs does not signify feelings. It does show a relationship that is firmly rooted in the querent’s destiny and even in their life plans, meaning that they feel comfortable in it and feel like it’s an important part of their life. With negative cards it can show that a person is seen by another person as just a prize, the next achievement. If the querent has had a fresh break up, it shows a reconciliation, while if the break up is old, it tends to show the moving on and finding satisfaction with someone else. It can also signify the further concretization and development of the relationship, hinting at an engagement or a marriage.

Work and Money: The card represents the querent’s assets, whether it be money, properties or something else. The cards around will show what kind of assets and what will happen to them. It shows someone who has gained or will gain recognition, and can signify a promotion. More generally it represents being capable carrying out one’s projects to the highest degree of realization, especially if very good cards complement the Seven of Clubs. It can also be a significator card for the querent’s career. This card does not stand for random good luck, but implies having put work into a project, especially since the project is likely to mean very much to the person.

Other: The Gratification card is connected with positive thinking and ambition. The person is unlikely to settle for less than the best (whatever that means for them). It shows psychological well-being and being at peace with oneself. Finally, it is the card of fame and of making a good name for oneself.

Important Combinations:

K♦ + 7♣ = promotion (+6♣, with a raise) | career advancement
7♣ + 2♥ = real estate
7♣ + 6♥ = liquid assets
4♥ + 7♣ + 9♥ = triumph in love | possible marriage
K♥ + 7♣ = a realized man, possibly an entrepreneur

REVERSED 7♣R

General: negative, but not necessarily tragic, unless with other very bad cards. If upright it shows the concretization of one’s life plans, when reversed it points to situations that don’t develop, situations from which nothing concrete comes. In general it points to lack of concreteness, insecurity and to problems to one’s reputation.

Love and Relationships: this card often comes up reversed when the querent is excited about having met someone new and they ask the cards what will happen. This card means, “Nothing will happen”, that is, there won’t be any major development, at least for a while (look at the other cards). In a couple, it point to lack of common projects, often signifying two people who do nothing together anymore and who are growing apart. A wedding is likely not to take place with this card, as no further development is shown. It can imply not feeling at ease in a relationship, or feeling that you are with the wrong person for you.

Work and Money: Generally, the reversed Gratification card means plans that do not become concrete, investments that don’t yield good results, or that will take much longer to mature if there are positive cards. With very negative cards it can signify a complete downfall. Career-wise, it is the card of the dead-end job, where it is very unlikely to get unstuck and progress up the ladder, unless steps are taken to change things around. If followed by cards such as Fortune or the Peacock, it shows a situation that seems desperate but will actually turn unexpectedly in a positive direction. More broadly it is a card of dissatisfaction and lack of recognition. It shows lack of financial or job security and with cards that point to malice it can signify having your reputation smeared by nasty colleagues.

Other: psychologically it is a card of dissatisfaction, insecurity and fears. It points to not feeling at peace with oneself. If upright it’s a card of fame, reversed it becomes a card of infamy or notoriety, especially if there are cards pointing to gossip and the like. Spiritually it can signify lack of breakthroughs and not feeling at ease with one’s beliefs.

Important Combinations:

A♥ or 8♣ + 7♣R = a meeting with no further development
7♣R + Q♠ + 8♦R = slander
7♣R + K♦ = can be a dead end job
7♣R + 9♦R = demotion
7♣R + 8♠ = a crisis of reputation or financial crisis

Vera Sibilla | Seven of Hearts – The Scholar (Letterato)

Name: Scholar / Artist (Scholar is the original title, Artist a newer one)
Italian Name: Letterato / Artista
Playing Card: 7♥
Polarity when Upright: Positive
Core Meanings: Talent, Being cut for something | Ability to plan, Intellect | A man of around 45 | A notary public, Signing of contracts
Polarity when Reversed: Negative
Reversed Core Meanings: Ulterior motives, Manipulation | Impotence in all fields of life

Card Description: a learned man in his library.

Suit and Number: All sevens in the Vera Sibilla relate to planning, projects and the ability to make such projects. Thus, in the Seven of Hearts we deal with talent and the good use of the intellect. Most other meanings are derived from it.

UPRIGHT 7♥

General: A favorable card, which can also behave as a face card for a man of around 40-50 (the age may vary, though). It represents the intellect and its attributes, as well as good education, learning, and the costructive side of the mind. Because of this reason, and also because the card depicts a professional who might very well be a lawyer or notary public, it is also connected to contracts and the signing thereof, since contracts represent, legally, a “meeting of the minds”.

Love and Relationships: extremely positive. On one side it may represent a person, the querent himself at times, or a loved one or partner. More generally, on the other side, it often represent good compatibility among people (or within the couple). It is a card of positivity and proactivity, showing that a person is serious in his or her intentions and is unlikely to just be in for a one-night-stand or to have ulterior motives. if a couple has been through a rough patch, the Seven of Hearts promises reconciliation and stability, and it shows that the couple is capable of working through their problems together in harmony.

Work and Money: Often the card stands for a contract or business transaction requiring notarization, such as the buying or selling of property. In general, it is connected to professions where one uses one’s intellect, and is often connected with the law or with places of learning. More in general, it represents a professional of any kind, but of a high level, and with some kind of recognition, not one working at a mom-and-pop shop. It represent one working alone or at least with a degree of creative control over what he does. It also signifies an affinity with one’s job, regardless of the type of work. Finally, it can show the ability to make and carry out good business plans.

Other: it is heavily connected with learning, creativity and the arts. It shows great intelligence, and with negative cards it may refer to one who is a bit of an obnoxious nerd, but it is never a very negative card. Spiritually it points to good will and it can signify a saint or its equivalent in another religion.

Important Combinations:

7♥ + 2♥ = a real estate contract | a male family member
7♥ + 4♥ = positive projects in love, serious intents | can signal reconciliation
7♥ + 6♦ = genius | great talent | education | solid projects
8♥ + 7♥ = artistry
7♥ + A♠ + 7♠ = can mean termination of contract

REVERSED 7♥R

General: the negative side of the mind. It shows destructive behavior, having an axe to grind and lack of intellectual abilities.

Love and Relationships: when it comes up, this card should always act as a warning sign that someone is not sincere. It shows one (not necessarily a man) who does not deal with the querent out of love and respect but selfishness. They pursue their personal interest above all and will usually not stop at anything. If the cards are not disastrous, however, it can show that one is unwilling to pursue the relationship further and bring it to the next level.

Work and Money: When it’s upright, the card shows mind over matter. When reversed, it’s definitely the opposite. There is a sense of being overwhelmed, which in turns points to impotence, lack of ability and skill and not being cut for a certain job. If the cards around are not too bad, it can simply show having bitten off more than you can chew and feeling somewhat overwhelmed. However, if a business partner is represented by this card, walk away: best case scenario they are incapable of keeping their word, worst case scenario they are ruthless schemers.

Other: Psychologically it shows the inability to cope with life, and can point to delusions and someone who lives in their own fantasy land, but not in the cutsy quirky way. It can show a definite lack of intelligence or, at least, of cultivation of what intelligence one has. In spiritual work, it shows ineptitude, delusions or even spirits you’d better stay away from, if you engage in certain practices.

Important Combinations:

7♥R + K♦R = not good for the job, incapacity
7♥R + A♣ = pursuing a marriage or union or contract for ulterior motives
7♥R + 9♠ = impotence (if also with A♣R, sexual impotence)
7♥R + 4♥R = depravity
7♥R + 6♦ = for a child it can be a learning disability
