Cartomancy with Playing Cards | Queen of Spades and King of Spades

In cartomancy with playing cards, the Queen of Spades (Q♠) and the King of Spades (K♠) can represent two people, usually rivals.

They are normally people who are, at the very least, cold toward the querent, and do not further his aims in any way, unless it is through pain (such as in the case of a doctor, or a judge). Sometimes they are openly hostile and will have plans and aims that are opposite to those of the querent. This is a big difference with Diamond figures, for the latters are neutral, and their objectives may or may not align with those of the querent.

With Spade people, however, it is clear that someone is going to try to throw a wrench in our plans. In love readings they are often the third party, and it is important to note that when the rival in love shows up as a Spade, it is very hard for the querent to get rid of them, meaning that usually these people have a serious relationship going on with the querent’s partner. It is not merely a flirt. The same is true in all other aspects of life.

With Spade Face cards, however, it is possible that they represent something other than a real person. The Queen of Spades is a symbol of falsehood, lies, deceit, gossip, slander. The card comes up whenever someone is being less than upfront with us. It also stands for things that are rotten, noxious, overripe, decaying, and it is also associated with lack of acceptance, privation, loss.

The King of Spades is also the card of the law and of all official authority. It can represent the legal system, organized religion and all those structures that are unbending and cold toward the querent, though not necessarily evil. Furthermore, it can represent science, but usually those aspects of science that are less pleasant, such as medicine.

Combinations:

Q♠ + 5♣ + 3♠ = a woman who does everything she can to interfere

Q♠ + 4♣ = lies (even when there’s no woman involved)

Q♠ + J♥ = a bad mother (if with cards of pregnancy, a pregnant woman who doesn’t want the child)

Q♠ + 5♠ + 4♠ = a destitute or desperate woman

A♠ + 6♠ + Q♠ = in a health reading, the removal of a body part

K♠ + 6♠ = a doctor (if Q♠ can be a female doctor, although more rarely. Often the K♠ indicates a doctor regardless of sex)

K♠ + 4♣ = official talks, a court case (again, here the King is the authority, regerdless of sex)

K♠ + 3♣ = official contract, can also be a civil marriage

3♥ + K♠ = a concession from an authority

9♣ + K♠ = it can be a foreign authority if it makes sense, otherwise it may show legal entanglements causing delays

Playing Cards and Numerology – The Queens

In cartomancy with playing cards, Queens are generally representative of women, and this is just about their only role. It is very rare that they come up to signify something else. That being said, they also have a connection with receptivity, nourishment and growth.
In some systems, the significators for the querents vary, but in the one I have been taught, it’s normally the Queen and King of Clubs that represent the querent.

The Queen of Hearts is usually a woman who is known to the querent. She represents a mother, daughter, relative or close friend. In general, she is a woman who has the querent’s best interest at heart, or at least should (you’ll need to check the surrounding cards). Even if she is not related, she could stand for a positive woman in general. For a lesbian querent, the Queen or Hearts can be the partner. The Queen of Hearts is also a symbol of acceptance and receptivity. It shows an environment where the querent thrives and is allowed to grow. Broadly, it confirms the receipt of something and it is a symbol of motherhood.

The Queen of Clubs is the female querent. If the querent is a man, she is usually the partner, either actual or perspective. If this interpretation is out of the question, she is still a woman in the querent’s life, usually not related to him. The Queen of Clubs is also connected to the idea of tending to something, working on it to make it grow or perfect it. She is not a symbol of great accomplishments, but she signifies honest effort, and doing what’s honorable. She is connected to harvest.

The Queen of Diamonds is a woman outside of the querent’s immediate circle. She is an acquaintance, a superior, a businesswoman, a professor. Her role is ambiguous, because her primary loyalty is to herself and her interests, but this doesn’t make her evil (after all, the woman you buy flowers from sells flowers to make money, not to please you). Compared to the Queen of Hearts she can be colder. She can also be a rival. The card is also a symbol of prosperity and of reaping the good fruits of one’s labor.

The Queen of Spades is a lonely or elderly woman. She can be an enemy or a difficult person. She doesn’t love the querent, nor does she further the querent’s aims (this is a great difference with the Queen of Diamonds, that the latter’s aims can allign with the querent’s, while those of the Queen of Spades are usually opposite). She can also be a woman who is very powerful, wears a uniform or represents the law. She can be an ex or a doctor. The card is a symbol of things that rot or are overripe or spoiled, and also signifies lack of acceptance (including lack of submission) privation, hunger, miscarriage. Finally, the card signifies falsehood, false words, false promises and false people.

Queen of Hearts – The Girlfriend (Amatrice)

She is, generally speaking, the female variant of the Jack of Hearts. She represents a woman who is moved by positive feelings, usually single, or at least as in love with her husband (or wife) as she was when they were still dating. She can also be a member of the family, a dear friend, a positive female influence, etc. Rarely, when the Queen of Hearts does not represent a person  she represents fulfillment, acceptance, feeling nurtured, since all Queens represent receptivity and nurturing qualities.

REVERSED Q♥

Just like the Jack, she is either in trouble or she is trouble. When she is trouble, she represents a woman who does not love the querent, at best, or who is prone to cheating and lying. Who she is and what she does will be shown by the surrounding cards.

Queen of Clubs – The Maiden (Giovane Fanciulla)

She is the female counterpart to the Jack of Clubs, the Servant. She represents a young woman, usually under 30, even a teen. She is usually innocent and sensitive and princess-like. She can be a daughter, a friend, a girlfriend, etc. Just like the Jack, when she represents the woman in a relationship it’s a sign that the story is unlikely to last forever, unless confirmed by other cards. She is generally kind, but also dominated by her emotions to make up for lack of experience, which may lead her to trouble. This last aspect can occasionally be signified by the card even when no young woman exists in the querent’s life, in which case the card is a warning. The card is connected to beauty and to virginity, as well as for needing protection, regardless of sex. Sometimes the card acts as a “pointer”, in which case the cards she points toward with her finger (those behind her back) represent a danger the querent isn’t paying enough attention to. All Queens signify receptivity. The Maiden represent receptivity to other people’s influence.

REVERSED Q♣

All face cards are either in trouble or they are trouble. The Queen of Clubs, however, is always more likely to be in trouble. She is going through some rough experience and feels neglected or unloved. Sometimes, when she IS trouble, she represents a woman who is childish and frivolous (regardless of age). In general, when she is not a person, the Queen of Clubs represents feeling overwhelmed and unable to act, and it points to lethargy and to depression and mental instability. She is still connected with inexperience.

Queen of Diamonds – The Wife (Donna Maritata)

She represents a mature woman and/or a married woman. Keep in mind that being married was the highest aspiration for a woman back when this deck was designed. More generally today the card represents a woman who is realized in life (can be a boss, for instance). More generally, though, she is married. Keep in mind that in love matters it’s always a bad sign when the significator does not show up as a Heart, so if the querent’s wife comes up as the Queen of Diamonds, she is not driven by feelings toward him. This doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have any positive feelings, but that her main loyalty is more to the marriage itself than to her partner: she stays in the relationship out of habit or out of tradition, although there may be affection. Of course this is not the case if cards such as Love or Faithfulness show up next to her, in which case she is in lovelove. In general, she is honest and practical. When she is not a person, the card represents wealth and good business growth. All Queens represent receptivity and nurturing, so the Queen of Diamonds can represent a positive environment to grow in, especially materially.

REVERSED Q♦

As repetitive as it may sound at this point, she is either trouble or in trouble.  One particular meaning of the card, though, is that it may represent an unmarried woman (or a divorced woman). It can also represent a woman who ends up in trouble to help the querent. Otherwise she is a petty, calculating woman who only thinks of herself.

Queen of Spades – The Rival (Nemica)

She is mainly the female counterpart to the Jack of Spades. Sometimes she represents the mother-in-law, in which case she is a neutral figure. More often, though she is a rival, a woman who loses if the querent wins and vice versa. She is a liar, a bitch or a woman who will try to harm the querent, or who does not see the querent with respect and dislikes him, either generally or in the situation. She is not well-intentioned. I should point out, and this is true for the Jack of Spades as well, that not everyone is constantly chased by a villain trying to tie them to the train tracks. Sometimes she is simply a woman angry at the querent, if the context allows for such interpretation. All Queens refer to receptivity. The Queen of Spades represents lack of acceptance and environments that are negative for the querent, privation, deprivation, lack of nourishment, starvation, hunger, lack of resources etc.

REVERSED Q♠

Just like the Jack, the Queen of Spades reversed is either an inimical woman losing her battle or a very stubborn inimical woman. She can be a woman who is bad because she is stupid.
When the card doesn’t represent a woman, it represents grave danger that is sometimes hard to avoid, feuds, plots, evil gossips etc. It also represents privation and lack of resources, like the upright counterpart, but worse.
