Vera Sibilla Cards That Indicate Gain

Following up on my previous post about Sibilla cards that show loss, today we discuss the opposite idea, i.e., that of gain. As usual, the list is not meant to be exclusive, and gain is not the only meaning of the following cards.

Six of Hearts (Money)

As the main significator card for money, the 6♥ often shows the querent’s (or another person’s) liquid assets. By itself it doesn’t necessarily show increase of money, but it can indicate that a situation will bring money, and so increase can be implied in the context.

Eight of Hearts (Hope)

The 8♥ can indicate investments, but more in general it shows a favorable situation, so if gain is looked for, it will probably come.

Ace of Clubs Reversed (Marriage)

When reversed, the Ace of Clubs can indicate wealth. However, it is a neutral card, so if followed by negative cards it can point to loss of wealth. By itself it speaks not only of money but of property in general.

Two of Clubs (the Peacock)

Being the talisman card of the deck, the 2♣ represents prosperity. It shows freedom from want and positive situations all around (the Peacock’s wheel is the counterpart to the World card’s garland in the tarot).

Five of Clubs (Fortune)

Both upright and reversed, the Fortune card shows positive situations and movement in the querent’s life, especially as it pertains to finances, so gain is implied. When reversed, the positivity is diminished or delayed.

Six of Clubs (Surprise)

Even in its design the card represents obtaining money. It can shows the querent’s income in general, but more specifically it indicates money coming in, usually without much effort on the querent’s part (it is a surprise, after all).

Seven of Clubs (Realization)

Although this card is geared more toward the querent’s patrimony or realization in the world, it can imply prosperous finances and its power is greater than that of the preceding card. When the 5♣, 6♣ and 7♣ fall together they represents major wealth.

Ten of Clubs Reversed (Levity)

When reversed, the Ten of Clubs indicates the ability to manage one’s finances wisely and to save. It can also represent lucky opportunities to make money, and by itself it can show a small sum of money coming in.

Ace of Diamonds (Room)

This one is a card of material prosperity. When upright, it can represent a well-balanced checkbook or positive upcoming news concerning one’s finances. Reversed it can show the same, but with bad cards it points to mismanagement.

Three of Diamonds (Gift)

It can be a literal gift, of course, but often it represents the act of receiving or being offered something. This can be very comforting for someone waiting for a loan to be approved. It is also a card of luxury, so gain is implied in some way.

Eight of Diamonds (Handmaid)

This one is the card of money coming and going. When upright, it usually shows money coming in, positive financial evolution and ascent. Like the Gift card, the 8♦ can represent the idea of receiving.

King of Diamonds (Merchant)

In the main this is the card of work and career. However, it is still a merchant, so it can be indicative of business, banking and money changing hands.

MQS

Vera Sibilla | Six of Hearts – The Safe (Denaro)

Name: Money or the Safe
Italian Name: Denaro (Money)
Playing Card: 6♥
Polarity when Upright: Positive to Neutral
Core Meanings: Money, Assets | the Past
Polarity when Reversed: Neutral
Reversed Core Meanings: the Future | Money trouble | Avarice

Card Description: a large safe containing old documents and sachets full of money.

Suit and Number: Sixes are connected with the notion of time, and Hearts interpret the concept by connecting to the idea of past and future (depending on whether the card is upright or reversed).

UPRIGHT 6♥

General: A neutral to positive card, depending on the context. It is mainly advantageous in material affairs, while being neutral in love affairs. Also, because it is in the Heart suit, it can represent the mixing of love and money for good or ill.

Love and Relationships: the traditional interpretation is someone marrying for money, especially women. Keep in mind that this deck was created in the 1800s, when young women were considered inveterate old spinsters if they hadn’t married by their early twenties, and that money was considered a legitimate reason to marry–it created wealth for the family. I have found this interpretation to be relatively irrelevant nowadays, unless confirmed by other cards that go in that direction. The Safe card does indicate a wealthy union, though.
Another common meaning is that of past. Usually, all the cards before the Six of Hearts are the past, those following it are the future or present. If a face card falls next to it, it represents someone you already know.

Work and Money: the notion of wealthy union applies to money as well, as this card can represent positive business ventures. It can also be a significator card for the querent’s assets, in which case the presence of positive or negative cards around it will tell you how they will develop. Needless to say, the concept of past can also apply to material matters. For instance, it can represent work experience, in which case, finding the Six of Hearts with cards showing smallness or wrongness may signify the querent doesn’t qualify for a job. Or it may show a job you have already done. Much depend on how and where the card falls in the spread.

Other: sometimes this card represents those people whose wealth blind them to the problems of the common people, but this needs to be supported by other cards. It can also stand for good advice given by someone with experience. It is connected with age.  Psychologically it can show one who mixes love and money or someone who has a somewhat materialistic mindset.

Important Combinations:
6♥ + A♠ = a difficult past
6♥ + Any Queen = traditionally a woman who has married money, but more often it’s a woman from the past (if a male face card, a man from the past, if ♠, the person caused trouble)
6♥ + 2♦ = a check, a financial document or a message about money
6♦ + 6♥ = can be financial speculation
6♥ + 3♦ = prosperity | a rich gift | a good financial offer

REVERSED 6♥R

General: it becomes a card of the future, usually not a near one. The idea of future includes that of something not experienced before, and can therefore signify suddenness, especially if the card opens a row of cards. Because it is the reverse of a card of money it can herald money difficulties. A special function of the reversed Six of Hearts is that it strengthens the meaning of the combinations surrounding it, so that they last longer, for good or ill.

Love and Relationships: in general, the reversed Six of Hearts is not much connected with love, though it can still signify that material interests hide behind a union, or even behind a crisis in a union. It can signify, near a significator, that the person in question is not yet known by the querent (or only by sight).

Work and Money: usually not a positive card. It can signify hardships and difficulties making money. Lack of abundance is one way to put it. If surrounded by positive cards, though, it can show a long-lasting period of prosperity. It is also connected with avarice, and therefore to money not given or not received, depending on the question.

Other: a dearth mentality is shown by this card when reversed. It can also imply that something good, shown by the surrounding cards, will take longer to manifest.

Important Combinations:
6♥R + Face card = someone new, not yet known
6♥R + J♠ + K♣R = a loan shark (if Q♠, a woman)
6♥R + K♠U/R = a loan will be refused, or the querent won’t receive the government’s money
6♥R + 8♠ = financial crisis
6♥R + A♣ + 4♥ + 10♥ = a marriage will be delayed but will take place

Vera Sibilla | Examples of Combinations – The Sixes

In this article you will find some examples of combinations using the Vera Sibilla. Most of these combinations are handed down by tradition. Studying and decoding combinations is a very good way to improve your cartomantic vocabulary, but bear in mind that the exact meaning of a combination depends on many other factors, such as the context of the question and the other cards in the spread, so I would encourage you to keep an open mind. As a rule, you will find that if you do not pose a question and these combinations come up, they will mean what the tradition says they mean 3 times out of 5. Also, keep in mind that it’s useless to try to combine every card with every other card beforehand so that no surprises will ever come up in a spread, just as it is useless to try to combine every word in a dictionary with every other to study a language. That time is best spent actually practicing.

NOTE:
R = Reversed

Vera Sibilla and Numerology – The Sixes

In the Vera Sibilla, the Sixes represent the natural evolution of the number Five. Whereas Fives dealt with transition, the Sixes represent the flow of time, with all its philosophical annexes: the idea of duration (or lack thereof), the notions of past, present and future, etc.

The four Sixes in the Vera Sibilla: The Six of Hearts (Money), The Six of Clubs (Surprise), The Six of Diamonds (Thought), The Six of Spades (Sighs)

The Six of Hearts is called Money. A better name for it would perhaps be The Safe or The Archive, because while it is true that it does represent money, liquid assets and wealth, this meaning is derived from the idea of accumulation which is a consequence of the traditional meaning of the Six of Hearts in cartomancy in Italy: the past.

And, indeed, the past is one of the main meanings of the Money card, strange as this may sound. Often, when together with a court card, it shows someone whom we already know, or an ex. In general, this card shows that we inherit something from the past, whether it be a situation, a person, an illness (which maybe we haven’t treated properly, or simply one that runs in the family, i.e. a hereditary disease), etc.

Money, the other main meaning of this card, is simply a logical consequence of the notion of time (number six) understood in a positive sense (suit of Hearts), i.e. as a resource and therefore as convertible in resources to be accumulated. Note that, reversed, the Six of Hearts talks about the future, as in future occurrences, unknown places, situations and people. It also heralds money trouble, but it is especially a card of avarice, i.e. unwillingness to let go of what we already have (or of the past).

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Six of Spades, Sighs, is the card of anxiety and tormented hope. This card, too, can represent something that already happened, but this time it doesn’t show it in a neutral way, but as a source of anguish. More in general, however, rather than to the past, this card is connected with the passage of time as a neutral-to-negative element that comes between us and our desire: the need to wait.

When reversed, one of the meanings of the Six of Spades is that it can represent the idea of letting go of our tormented desires or of our anxiety concerning the past. This is one of the cards that can show, when reversed, opening up to new possibilities rather than clinging to what causes us nothing but grief.

It’s the ability to step outside of ourselves or of our issue and listen to reason, whether it’s in the form of new inspiration or some professional advice. When surrounded by more neutral or negative cards, however, it remains a card of instability, material or psychological even when reversed.

In between Hearts and Spades we find the Six of Clubs, the Surprise, and the Six of Diamonds, Thought. The Six of Clubs is the card of the present time. It represents things happening now, or at least in the very near future. With it are connected the ideas of suddenness and immediacy, and therefore marvel and surprise, of coming across something that was unexpected. Since the suit of Clubs is positive, this unexpected surprise is usually positive.

Taking this idea of “chancing upon” further, we get to the meanings of receiving, getting, acquiring that this card also shows. But this is also the card of things that start flourishing. Note how, in the image, the guy is fishing a bag of money out of a river or lake, which means that, while the result was beyond his expectations, he did have to cast his net. As such, this is the card of minimum effort for great results: small past efforts paying off in the present and possibly heralding a positive future.

Finally, the Six of Diamonds, Thought, also represents the present, but it’s more the a-temporal present that exists in the mind, rather than the physical present of the Six of Clubs. As the card of consciousness, the Six of Diamonds is the point where past, present and future converge and are organized, made sense of and shaped into alternative ideas of reality that we then seek to act out.

As such, this card also shows plans, ideas, etc. Not necessarily true ideas, not necessarily good plans, and not necessarily plans that we are going to be able to act out: this is the card of pure consciousness, the timeless present which fluctuates above the flow of real time.
