Love Is Just A Chemical Reaction (And This Is Just a Bunch of Pixels)

I was having one of my philosophical discussions with a friend, and she was venting about how she doesn’t believe in love anymore, and that, at the end of the day, love is just a chemical reaction of the brain.

I thought this was an interesting take, not because it hasn’t been done before (it’s a cliché for a reason), but because it is ripe with philosophical (and magical) presuppositions that are worth exploring.

Usually, by saying that love is only a chemical reaction, we are trying to decrease the power or importance of love. This in turn implies that we consider chemistry something inferior to feelings, since we are trying to reduce feelings to chemistry.

Yet why should such a statement make us believe that love is less than we think it is, instead of opening us to the idea that chemistry is more than we give it credit for? After all, if love = chemical reaction X, then saying ‘chemical reaction X’ instead of ‘love’ is just a rebranding excercise: we are merely giving a different name to the same experience. It doesn’t change one iota of how love works, its effects on us and on existence itself.

So love *is* a chemical reaction we experience. It isn’t *just* a chemical reaction we experience. And who does the experiencing anyway? Is it the same biological substance that is subject to the chemical reaction or is it something further beyond it, an observing consciousness which can become aware of it, as well as being aware of its own awareness?

Even if we choose the first route (i.e., it is the same biological substance) , we are still saying that the chemical reaction has awareness attached to itself. So we are saying that same substance subject to chemical reactions is capable of developing awareness of them. That’s no small fit. And yet again, we are still left with something that polarizes into two aspects: love and awareness of it. In this majestic self-aware process there is plenty of space for wonder, and love is once again restored to the status of powerful driving force.

The Greek philosopher and magus Empedocles considered love/friendship one of the two great powers setting existence in motion, together with hatred/enmity, because they fuse the four elements together and then disintegrate them. Magicians ever since have worked with the links of sympathy and antipathy (of love and hatred, of compatibility and incompatibility) that animate everything. Empedocles was, at heart, a naturalist, who didn’t try to introduce extra principles into his philosophy. Be he, too, saw that the fusion and disintegration of the elements (chemical reactions, one might say) is something so universal and so fundamental that without it nothing can get done.

A Crush on an Unhappy Man! (Example Reading)

This is not the first time I do a reading for someone who has a crush on a colleague. The girl in question asked me if a love story could start with him

A love reading using the Bolognese Tarot (Thirteen Card Spread)

I used the Bolognese Tarot to answer this.

This is one of those spreads that let themselves be interpreted in more than one direction: not just horizontally but vertically as well. The First two things that caught my eye were the first line, with the King of Wands (him) trapped between the Tower (prison) and the Seven of Coins (tears); and the vertical line on the right, with the Ace of Wands and the Ace of Cups together, indicating a family, but the two cards are hemmed in by the tears and the Moon (again, negativity).

So this is an unhappy man we are talking about. In the following line, the Angel card, which would provide happiness and solutions or at least peace, is blocked by the Hermit. Note that the Ace of Wands, which can indicate attraction, is also affected by the blockage, so while he may be somewhat attracted by the querent, he is not gonna act out on it.

The following line was a bit harder to decipher, but I saw it as him having a daughter and being especially attached to her: note the Page of Cups, the girl, of the house (Ace of Cups) brings him jollity or happiness (Ten of Cups). It later turned out he has more than one child but he is more attached to the girl. It is possibly one of the things that keep him in the marriage.

In the end, there is probably going to be no relationship with the man: the relationship card (te Ace of Swords) is negatively affected by the Moon, and the querent will only have a business relationship (Star) with him.

One thing I need to emphasize is that the querent knew the dude is married, but didn’t tell me, not because she wanted to try me, but because in her mind she thought it was somehow “obvious”. It is always interesting to see how querents take our ability to see things for granted (only to be sorely disappointed when we make the most minor mistake).

In The Name Of Love (Example Pyramid Reading)

Yesterday we had a nice reunion with some friends. One of them asked the cards if she has a shot with her dance instructor, whom she’s crushing hard on. These were the cards:

6♣️ – Q♣️ – 10♥️ – 9♠️
K♣️ – 10♣️ – Q♥️
A♥️ – 3♣️
8♠️

The first thing that jumped at me was that nasty Eight of Spades at the end, which literally says “it will end in tears.” If we take the three angles of the pyramid, they are the Six of Clubs, Nine of Spades and Eight of Spades. Bleak.

My querent’s card falls on the first line, together with the Six, the Ten of Hearts and the Nine of Spades. If we were to read this line as a literal sentence, it would be “Coming from a place of fatigue your happiness there’s not“. In other words, my friend is not just single, but lonely, has been for a while and she’s unhappy about it. This is interesting, because it shows that her crush is more like a compensation mechanism.

Then we come to him, the King of Clubs, who is on a journey (Ten of Clubs) with a loved woman (Queen of Hearts) that leads to a house (Ace of Hearts) of union (Three of Clubs). He is engaged. The final Eight of Spades does not say that he is unhappy about the engagement, but that the engagement brings tears to the querent.

The Proposal (Example Reading)

Here’s a quick one I thought was interesting. A querent wanted to know if her boyfriend would propose to him. This is the reading:

K♣️ – 3♦️ – J♥️ – Q♣️ – 2♣️

Notice that the two querent cards both come up in the reading. They are separated by the Three of Diamonds and the Jack of Hearts. I didn’t think the Jack could represent a literal child, but to be on the safe side I asked the querent and she said they have no children. If they did, it could have shown a relatively loose relationship but with children.

The Three of Diamonds represents small projects within the couple. It is not negative, but falling next to the querent’s boyfriend it made me think that he was still a bit immature (especially with the Jack) or at least that he didn’t have big projects in mind. However, we find the Queen followed by the Two of Clubs which represents some steps taken. To me it looked as though she would be the one to take action, either proposing herself or pressuring him to commit further.

What ended up happening is that the querent fell pregnant and told the boyfriend she wanted to at least move together. They are apparently making arrangements to find a place, and an engagement may be on the horizion in the next few years.

Could I have foreseen the pregnancy? Maybe, with the Jack of Hearts so central to the spread. Still, it didn’t feel like a pregnancy spread (and after all it wasn’t even the question).

What I find interesting about the spread is how it describes the nature of the querent’s relationship and who wants to take it to the next level

Learning From Experience

Previous / Back to Index / Next

From the Microcosmicon, 28:

The doctor told Jade I’d be better than her late wife. I immediately shocked her with my mannerisms.
“That’s so Ana!”

For months I kept surprising Jade with my impression. In fact, I was more pliable than Ana: we never fought over the remote or her cooking, as Ana would have. I could learn and adapt, without prejudice.

Yet this bothered her.
“Ana wouldn’t have done it.”
She started sleeping on the couch. I didn’t disturb her, because that was her wish.

Rotting in the cellar, I realize she wanted me to do what she didn’t want. But I can’t.

Vera Sibilla Cards That Indicate Positive Feelings

In the Vera Sibilla, every card can indicate some type of feelings. I have singled out some of those that indicate positive feelings. As usual, the list is not meant to be exclusive.

Ace of Hearts (A♥️) – Conversation

This card is broadly connected with words and self-expression. However, when discussing someone’s feelings, they indicate someone who is capable of expressing their feelings to someone else and reaching some kind of communion with them. In general, it shows an attitude of openness toward others.

Two of Hearts (2♥️) – The House

Usually the Two is the card of the house and of places in general. However it is also connected with harmony between two people, and it shows a constructive attitude, especially, though not exclusively, in a love reading.

Four of Hearts (4♥️) – Love

The Love card is, wouldn’t you know, the card of love, but also of strong feelings of affection in all personal relationship. It is connected with the motions of our heart, and as such it shows emotions above and beyond reason. The caveat here is that this card is not stable, and it requires other more grounded cards to promise lasting happiness.

Five of Hearts (5♥️) – Happiness

The Happiness card indicates everything connected with joy and good intentions. Being the card of the bethrodal, it also shows a certain degree of commitment to someone, and is therefore also a symbol of fidelity.

Seven of Hearts (7♥️) – The Scholar

The Scholar is a rational card, one of planning and long term prospects. When not damaged by the presence of difficult cards it shows the desire to create something lasting, as well as a helpful attitude.

Eight of Hearts (8♥️) – Hope

Hope is the positive feeling par exccellence. It represents optimism, honesty, someone who takes the high road, is elevated, spiritual, reliable. The exception is when the Hope card is not supported by stronger cards, as in this case it tends to show flirts, due to its connection with ease and lack of trouble.

Nine of Hearts (9♥️) – Faithfulness

Contrary to popular belief, the Nine of Hearts (not the Four) is the best card when it comes to feelings. Not only does it show love, but unlike the Love card, it also represent a strong bond and commitment that goes beyond those feelings and is pursued systematically. It is the card of the diehard supporter, of the best friend, of the lifelong love commitment.

The Heart Court Cards

Court cards tend to be neutral. However, the Heart court cards, when upright, indicate a person who is in love or who has a positive attitude toward the question or the querent.

Four of Clubs (4♣️) – The Friend

Similar to the Nine of Hearts, the Friend can indicate friendship (when it doesn’t show a literal -female- friend). The difference is that the concept of friendship of the Four of Clubs is not as strong and it is often connected with practical matters. When reversed, the Friend card can indicate a helpful attitude that takes the form of tips, recommendations, etc.

Six of Clubs (6♣️) – The Surprise

The Surprise card is connected broadly with things that come to us easily. As such, it indicates people who are similar, have similar interests and find it easy to grow together and pursue similar activities. Relationships tend to flourish with this card.

Seven of Clubs (7♣️) – The Realization

In general, this card speaks of ambitions in a positive sense, so it can show people having common goals and projects.

Eight of Clubs(8♣️)  – The Reunion

The reconciliation card of the deck, the Eight of Clubs is indicative of a willingness to compromise and to find common ground. Furthermore, it shows someone who is social and moves toward others with positive intents in mind.

Nine of Clubs (9♣️) – Merriment

In keeping with the energy of the suit, the Nine of Clubs indicate positive bonds, though not necessarily deep. It is a card of fun and of playing, drinking and having a good time together.

Ace of Diamonds (A♦️) – The Room

The Room has, among its meanings, that of intimacy. As such it represents someone who seeks closeness and contact. However it is not a card of love, as it is in the suit of Diamonds, not that of Hearts.

Seven of Diamonds (7♦️) – The Child

As the card of children, the Seven of Diamonds shows someone to be open, good-hearted and inoffensive, unless with cards that bring out the worst qualities of children (immaturity, etc.). It represents also someone who wants to start new things and is unprejudiced and innocent.

Eight of Diamonds (8♦️) – The Handmaid

This is the card of someone who is serviceable, dependable and hardworking. It is also a card of politeness and the desire of peace. It can show someone of a noble character who is helpful, friendly and improving himself to be better with others.

Two of Spades (2♠️) – The Old Lady

As pretty much the only card of this suit that is not outright negative, the Old Lady can indicate feelings of affection toward others, though these feelings tend to be tenuous and not very dynamic. It can also indicate someone who uses the wisdom and experience they gained in life to be of service to others in a detached, serene way

Can I Trust Him? Well, Can He Trust You? Vera Sibilla Reading With a Twist

Querents are not always paragons of virtue. There are usually two sides to most stories. I generally distrust people whose past is littered with psychos, crazy ex and narcissists. While someone CAN be that unlucky, the general trend seems to me to be more that people who have trouble in every relationship tend to be the cause of the trouble. “My love life is always a mess!” Of course it is, Rhonda, you are always in it!

As I said, there are usually two sides to each story, but as diviners we rarely hear the other one, so what we are stuck with is the querent’s own version, their word that the universe is constantly conspiring against them and a divination system usually saying exactly the opposite. And we are stuck in the middle of the perfect storm, carefully trying to thread the fine line between politeness and truth.

We were at a friend’s house and she had invited over another friend. The latter asked me the question: “I’m always unlucky in love. I’ve started dating this new guy, can I trust him?” Our friend made an odd face I could not decipher as we did the spread. These were the cards:

Is he reliable?

As I already discussed, sometimes the cards describe the development of a situation as if it were a book. At other times, they recreate a scene that can almost be observed with the characters calling attention to what they symbolize. This is one of those situations.

Right off the bat we notice that both querents are present. They are within the age range of the Queen of Clubs and Jack of Clubs. However, the mere fact that they are represented by these cards in a love question shows that this is not the romance of the century and will probably end, sooner or later. The cards, though, tell us something else.

Look at the Queen of Clubs! She is reversed and occupying the center of the spread. Usually, when the Young Maiden (Giovane Fanciulla) is reversed, she is afflicted by something, as opposed to other significators which, when reversed, tend to show problematic behavior.

This is unless the Maiden is reversed and near cards that show problematic behavior. This is exactly the case here. She is together with the Four of Diamonds, the Falsehood card (which, notice, is on her side of the spread, not on the guy’s side) and the Ten of Clubs, the Levity or Carefreeness card.

On the other hand, we have the Ten of Hearts, i.e., the Perseverance card, on the side of the boyfriend. Although the Perseverance card is not one of major feelings, it still shows him to be dependable. She, however, is depicted by the cards as being not only somewhat whiny, but also a little flighty (someone might say a little floozy, especially since she comes up reversed with the Ten of Hearts at the end of the spread)

In this situation, I tried to sugarcoat it to the querent by telling her that he is rather dependable, though this romance was probably not the one that would lead to marriage, and that he also had doubts about her, and that she should make sure not to send mixed signals.

Upon leaving, our friend pulled me aside and she told me that the girl has literally been the “butterfly” of the group, landing from man to man, being unreliable and not learning anything from experience. This is very well described by the reversed Queen of Clubs, who, in a negative context, can show a woman with a princess complex who thinks everyone else is at fault.

Vera Sibilla | Four of Hearts – Love (Amore)

Name: Love
Italian Name: Amore
Playing Card: 4♥
Polarity when Upright: Positive
Core Meanings: Love, positive feelings | a positive context, a context where the querent feels loved and safe
Polarity when Reversed: Neutral to Negative
Reversed Core Meanings: Homosexuality | Lack of love, Lack of feelings | breakups, rifts | Sexual depravity

Card Description: a blindfolded Cupid soars in the air, unbound by the laws of mortals.

Suit and Number: all fours in the Vera Sibilla are connected to the context that the querent finds or will find himself or herself in. The suit of Hearts, being positive, shows that the querent will find himself in a context where they will feel loved, appreciated and taken care of, and all contexts where the querent’s emotions are heightened (usually in a positive sense).

UPRIGHT 4♥

General: the main and obvious meaning of this card is that of love. Traditionally, however, this card is described as signifying an irrational force that is impossible to tame, so this may on occasion apply. Normally it symbolizes love, positive feelings and strong attachments. There is, however, a certain sense of lively wildness about this card, which contrasts with the sense of disciplined reliability of the other main love card of the deck, the Nine of Hearts. We can say that, while in practice it usually signifies love, the Four of Hearts is connected to all contexts that elicit a strong emotional reaction.
A specific function of this card is that, sometimes, when it comes up at the beginning of a sequence, it loses its meaning of love, and it simply shows that the situation described by the following cards is what the querent is attracting to himself or herself in the near future. With negative cards, if we are not talking about love, it shows deep disappointment due to excessive emotional involvement in a situation that doesn’t end well.

Love and Relationships: this is obviously the  area where the influence of this card is most direct. As most questioners come to us asking about relationship issues, the literal meaning of the Four of Hearts, that is, love, normally comes to the fore. In itself, the Love card tells of genuine feelings, requited love and deep connection. The card, however, is easily influenced by strong positive or negative cards. Especially cards that tell of disruption or of cheating can easily taint its meaning. Furthermore, if both significators (querent and love interest) are present, their reciprocal relation and their relation to the Love card must be carefully studied to see who is more committed, who may be cheating, etc. The same is true for the Nine of Hearts, by the way.
In general, even when love is not an issue, the Love card foretells harmony and a deep connection with someone, whether it be a relative, a sibling, a friend, etc. The card qualifies all contexts as deeply positive and nourishing for the querent, and shows a deep bond of affection from the querent to the context in question.
Again, I should stress that the Four of Hearts has a rather undisciplined energy, so if the overall energy of the spread is one of flightiness, the Love card may show a flash in the pan or a relationship that is unlikely to survive the first hurdles. Cards showing thought, planning, faithfulness, consistency, effort etc. all tend to stabilize the Love card, turning the deep but capricious feeling it can signify into a deeply rooted feeling.

Work and Money: the 4♥ is not a money card. It can, of course, show love of money, though in general this is signalled by other more negative cards. It is more likely that it signifies support by loved ones, and in general the idea of being in a love-filled environment where one’s wants and needs are taken care of. It can show the ability to attract money and resources.
In career readings, it may signify a deep love of one’s chosen career path. More negative cards around it may suggest an eccessive devotion to one’s career or an eccessive emotional attachment to it. Because it’s a card of expansive feelings, for merchants and business owners the Love card can sometimes show expanding their business, though this is not a common meaning. The Four of Hearts can, of course, suggest careers surrounding topics like love and feelings.

Other: psychologically, the card indicates deep intuition and also a certain wild (but kind) spirit. It also highlights emotionality and the ability to form deep connections. Spiritually, this is one of the cards that can indicate the soul. Artistically it points to great inspirations, but with negative cards it may highlight a certain lack of discipline.

Important Combinations:
4♥ + A♣ = a marriage of love
4♥ + 3♦ + 7♠ = end of love due to different characters (the 3♦ is connected to one’s “gift” and therefore to one’s specificity as a person)
4♥ + 2♥ = living together as a couple
K♦ + 4♥ = can be a job you love or love found at work, or a positive work environment
2♦ + 10♣R + 4♥ = these days, it can easily mean finding love on a dating app

REVERSED 4♥R

General: traditionally, the main meaning of this card when it comes up reversed is that of homosexuality. Bear in mind that this oracle was devised back when everything except joyless, reproduction-oriented sexual intercourse was considered a perversion, and homosexuality was seen as the main representative of the class of perversions. Nowadays, the card can still signify homosexuality, especially if it’s relevant to the question. However, it is my experience that when a gay querent consults the cards who is at peace with themselves and is not in the closet, the 4♥, when it shows up at all, it shows up upright, and if it does come up reversed it’s to signify other things, such as a breakup or unfaithfulness or some kind of sexual perversion, since the latter remains a core meaning of this card.* Additionally, the reversed Love card can signify rifts in the couple that are hard to mend, lack of love or an unhealthy expression of feelings.

Love and Relationships: as said, this card can be a symbol of homosexuality, although it tends to take on this meaning today only in specific instances. Otherwise, the easiest way to understand this card is that it shows love problems. These can vary, based on the gravity of the surrounding cards, from arguments to unrequited love to deep rifts in any relationship to cheating and false love. It can also signify feelings of love having ended.

Work and Money: the card does not speak much about these issues, although it can show an unhealthy attachment to money. In general, it discourages investments and business ventures as the querent is not seeing things properly, possibly due to emotional turmoil or due to putting the whim of the moment before careful reasoning. It can show prostitution, but this is rarely seen as a legitimate career when represented by this card, which tends to highlight the more negative emotional side of it. Sometimes it signifies that the querent works in a context where he or she doesn’t feel loved, or worse.

Other: the card is a staple of combinations highlighting perversion and sexual debauchery (regardless of whether the querent is straight or gay). On the other hand, psychologically it can show someone who feels deeply unloved or someone whose emotional reactions are spiralling out of control. Spiritually, it shows a soul bogged down by disempowering emotions or tainted in some way, if you choose to be preachy. It can show someone who is blundering from mistake to mistake.

Important Combinations:
A♦R + 4♥R = coming out or outing
4♥R + 7♥R = sexual deviant
4♥R + 5♦ = sadness due to unfulfilling love life | it can mean not accepting one’s homosexuality
4♥R + K♦ = a bad work environment that is not nurturing and we don’t like
2♥ + 4♥ + A♣ = living together despite the lack of feelings

Other Combinations: Vera Sibilla | Examples of Combinations – The Fours

* I must stress this: do NOT consult the cards for a validation of your own personal moral code. Cartomancy was born with humans, it evolves with humans and will die with humans, and while the fact that the Sibilla was devised in the XIX century implies that sexual perversion is one of the main meanings of the 4♥R, this doesn’t mean that the moral code of XIX century Italian burgeoisie is the absolutely right one and you should live by it. Nor does it imply that your own moral standards are the right ones, nor those of your neighbor, or those of the Japanese or the Native Americans. I can’t swing a dead cat without coming by readers online who use the cards to try to prove that Orange Man Bad or that Hillary belongs in jail or that abortion is right or wrong, depending on their particular political leanings. This is nothing short of psycho-political onanism. In reality, these people are just fooling themselves and projecting their canned opinions onto the cards, which kind of defeats the purpose of using divination. Everyone thinks the universe is woven according to their moral prejudices, but, guess what, you are not that special, Rhonda.

Vera Sibilla | Examples of Combinations – The Fours

In this article you will find some examples of combinations using the Vera Sibilla. Most of these combinations are handed down by tradition. Studying and decoding combinations is a very good way to improve your cartomantic vocabulary, but bear in mind that the exact meaning of a combination depends on many other factors, such as the context of the question and the other cards in the spread, so I would encourage you to keep an open mind. As a rule, you will find that if you do not pose a question and these combinations come up, they will mean what the tradition says they mean 3 times out of 5. Also, keep in mind that it’s useless to try to combine every card with every other card beforehand so that no surprises will ever come up in a spread, just as it is useless to try to combine every word in a dictionary with every other to study a language. That time is best spent actually practicing.

NOTE:

A + K + 4R = a job interview that will go well and will solve the querent’s work problems
9R + 4R = discovery of a betrayal or of someone cheating
10 + 8♠ + 4R = discovery of a swindle or scam or fraud (usually, in time to avoid the worst)
4♠ + 7♠ + 4R = a surgery that brings relief
J♠ or Q♠ + 4R = uncovering an enemy
4R + A♠ = the discovery of a lie or a betrayal brings sorrow (however, in the long run it will be for the better, or the 4R wouldn’t have come up)
