Vera Sibilla | Interpreting Face Cards

Face cards are those that represent people. This is a more comprehensive notion than “court cards”, because not all face cards are court cards: for instance, the 2♠ can behave like a face card, a significator, but it is not a court card. Conversely, not all court cards necessarily behave like face cards: for instance, the K♦ is rarely a physical person, being a significator of the querent’s job.

Face cards are, for the most part, neutral. Heart cards tend to be slightly positive in themselves, but they also absorb the meaning of the cards surrounding them. Spade cards tend to be negative (though the K♠ is neutral when it is a face card) and being black they tend to assert their negativity over the positive meanings of other cards.

Face cards are neutral, and this means that they are heavily influenced by their surroundings. The cards immediately outside of a face card often give us the context and description of the person in terms of the situation. For instance, if the J♣ falls between K♦ and A♥, he can be a coworker or a work contact. If the same card falls between the 4♥ and the 9♥, he is either your best friend or your boyfriend. If he falls next to the A♣, he is probably a young husband. And so on.

When a face card does NOT appear in the spread even though you’d expect it to, that’s a sign. The person is not active in the events of the spread and is unlikely to be able to change them.

When a face card DOES appear in the spread, its suit will give us a hint of the role it takes on, if caring, helpful, disinterested, disingenuous, axe-grinding, inimical, if they are active, optimist, or passive and in need of help, etc. This is to be understood within the context of the question. For instance, a mature woman may occasionally show up as the Q♣ if she is either immature or in a precarious situation where she needs help.

When a face card appears as a suit that is not good for the question, the cards surrounding it may supplement positive connotations that the suit lacks. For instance, the Q♦ is a married woman, however when a married woman appears as the Q♦ in a love reading, her primary loyalty is not to the partner but to the marriage itself, which doesn’t mean she doesn’t love, but that she is primarily in the relationship out of inertia or tradition. However, if the Q♦ is next to the 4♥ or the 9♥, then she is very much in love, as though she were the Q♥.

When two face cards fall immediately next to each other, this is a sign that they know each other and interact (or will interact), unless other signs contradict this. Sometimes, if two face cards falling immediately next to each other are of the same sex, they can represent the same person. For instance, the Q♦ and Q♠ together can either signify two people or the same person, depending on the context. This is rarer when one of the two is reversed and the other isn’t, but it can still happen. Usually, when two face cards signify the same person it means the person has a dual role in the situation (in the example above, a wife who is inimical, maybe in the process of getting a divorce, etc.)

When two face cards have one or two or three cards between them (on occasion even more) those cards can be taken to describe their relationship and what unites them. For instance, J♣ + 9♦ + 5♠ + K♥ can show a very turbulent father-son relationship. Usually, when a combination showing the dynamics between two people fall between those people, they tend to have a less predictive effect. In the example above, if the 9♦ + 5♠ had fallen outside of the two significators it could have shown a breakup, and a rather painful one. But because it falls between them, it tends to only show how they relate to each other, and other cards will tell us whether or not they will fall out. If the sequence is followed by 8♣, there will be reconciliation, if 7♠, a break in the relationship.

When of two face cards one is reversed, they tend to be incompatible for whatever reason (look at the other cards). When they are both reversed they are still incompatible, but the incompatibility is more pervasive and visceral and less due to circumstances.

In general, a face card that is not the querent who is reversed signifies either someone who is in trouble or someone who works against the querent or, at least, disagree with them within the context of the situation.

When a face card is reversed, sometimes it signifies that the person has some type of issue related to the cards surrounding his significator. For instance, K♥R + 7♣ can signify a man who doesn’t feel realized. His card being reversed introduces a negation. It is similar to K♥ + 7♣R, the difference being subtle and somewhat psychological: if the face card is reversed, he is probably one who generally doesn’t feel realized. This notion however must be supported by other considerations.

Another example. Q♥R + 9♥ can signify a woman who is not faithful. The meaning is similar to Q♥ + 9♥R, but in the former case it is possible that she generally has a tendency not to be faithful–it is more rooted in her character than in the context of the situation. Again, you need to check for other signs.

When a slew of cards come up reversed (possibly all of them) it is a sign that the person’s world has been turned upside down.

In this article you will find some examples of combinations using the Vera Sibilla. Most of these combinations are handed down by tradition. Studying and decoding combinations is a very good way to improve your cartomantic vocabulary, but bear in mind that the exact meaning of a combination depends on many other factors, such as the context of the question and the other cards in the spread, so I would encourage you to keep an open mind. As a rule, you will find that if you do not pose a question and these combinations come up, they will mean what the tradition says they mean 3 times out of 5. Also, keep in mind that it’s useless to try to combine every card with every other card beforehand so that no surprises will ever come up in a spread, just as it is useless to try to combine every word in a dictionary with every other to study a language. That time is best spent actually practicing.

Diamond Court Cards

J♦ + A♥ = intermediary, intermediation, translation, arbitration
J♦ + A♦ = an agency of some kind (to be read from the surrounding cards
J♦ + 2♦ = correspondence, usually important
J♦ + 9♥ = positive, trustworthy news, good intermediary/go-between, can be an angel in the appropriate context
J♦ + 4♦ = the opposite


J♦ + 6♦R = can be a spirit guide in the appropriate context (9♥ or 8♥ would confirm)
J♦ + 3♣ = short trip, errands
J♦ + 2♠ = short trip, communications form the old lady
J♦ + 3♠ = communication that doesn’t arrive or communication of loss, or negative news (J♦R would accentuate the negativity)
J♦R + 8♦R = gossip, a sharp tongue (Q♠ would make the gossip more malignant in nature)
3♦ + J♦ = a parcel or official offer of some kind


J♦R + A♥ = bad intermediary or go-between
Q♦ + 4♥ = married woman in love (usually, if the sognificant woman shows up as the Q♦ in a love reading it’s not a great sign, it means the feelings have sort of fizzled out, but as I said before, the surrounding cards can modify the court card giving them attributes they usually don’t have)
Q♦+ 4♥R = lesbian
Q♦ + 2♥ = housewife, lady of the house, homeowner
Q♦ + 9♠ = she is in a committed relationship
Q♦ + A♣R = separated or divorced
Q♦ + K♦ = can be a colleague


Q♦ + K♣ = female boss or doctor
Q♦ + K♥ = usually husband and wife
Q♦ + 7♦ = woman with children
Q♦ +4♣ = a caring woman, or a woman who is of service, either to the querent or for a living (e.g. school teacher, etc)
Q♦R + 4♦ = a very negative woman to stay away from
Q♦R + A♣R = stengthens the notion of “not married” or separated
Q♦R + 8♦R + 6♥ = a prostitute, either literally or figuratively (Q♥R would also be a prostitute)
Q♦R + 3♠ = a widow in need


K♦ + A♥ or 8♣ = job interview or job meeting
K♦ + A♣ or 7♥ = contract (if A♣ can also be a merger of two firms or a partnership)
K♦ + 7♥ = an intellectual job or a deskbound job, a job you are cut out for
K♦ + A♦ = may be a store
K♦ + 10♠ = wearing a uniform or being in the military
K♦ + J♣ = a subordinate job or a physical job, can also be


K♦ + 7♦ + J♣ = an internship
K♦ + 6♥ = a well-paid job, a banker
K♦ + 5♥ = a fixed term contract
K♦ + 10♥ = lasting job
K♦ + 6♣ = your wages, a raise
K♦ + 7♣ = job security, a promotion
K♦ + 8♠ + J♠ = mobbing
K♦ + A♠ + 5♠ = losing your job, or very negative changes on the job
K♦ + 4♠ = a work-related illness, unemployment


K♦ + 4♠R = more clearly unemployment, or lack of hoped for developments
K♦ + 9♠ = can also be unemployment
8♣ + K♦ + 10♠R = can mean working two jobs, one by night
A♠R + K♦ + 10♠R = night shifts
K♦ + 10♠R + 4♦ = a rather shifty job or a downright illegal one, querent may not be paid
K♦ + 3♣ = business trip
K♦ + 5♦R = poorly paid job, shifty job, work-related stress


K♦ + 2♠ + 5♠ = retirement, or the natural end of a contract (meaning you are not randomly fired)
K♦R + 7♥R = lack of talent, the wrong job for you, lack of practical orientation
K♦R + 7♣R = if the querent is working, the job brings nothing of value to the querent
K♦R + 4♥ + 5♦ = problems at work having an effect on the querent’s love life (if 2♥R, on the querent’s home environment)
K♦R + 8♦R = among other possibilities, a sleazy business man
K♦U/R + A♥R or 8♣R = difficult relationships with the colleagues, for a business person could be difficulty reaching customers

In all combinations about work, K♦R instead of K♦U accentuates the idea of problems at work or in the work life of the querent

Spade Court Cards


J♠ + K♦ = can be a financial enemy or negative colleague, but in the right context it is traditionally the father-in-law (in the right context, the J♠ could represent alone the father-in-law, though)
Q♠ + 2♠ = mother-in-law or negative older woman (again, the Q♠ alone could represent the mother-in-law)
J♠ or Q♠ + 3♥* = someone spying on you or keeping an eye on you in a negative sense
J♠ + 9♦ + Q♠ = a mob or negative group
A♥ + J♠ or Q♠ = negative new acquaintance or you are revealing information to someone who’ll use it against you

J♠ or Q♠ + 2♣R + 3♠R and/or 10♠R = evil socrerer/sorceress (actually the K♠ may also be present instead of the J or Q)
J♠ or Q♠ + 8♠ + 10♥R + 7♠ = an aggressive person who will take out their ill-will or envy on the querent
J♠ or Q♠ + 8♦R + 2♥ = among other possibilities, negative neighbors
9♠ + J♠ or Q♠ + 4♠R = inmates
J♠ or Q♠ + A♥R + 2♣ or 5♣ + 4♣ or 9♥ = enemy becoming friend
J♠ or Q♠ + 9♠R + 6♥R = can be a swindler

6♦R + J♠ or Q♠ + 9♦ + 5♠ = evil spirits, masculine or feminine (without the 6♦R it could be people bringing great turmoil into the querent’s life, or again ghosts)
J♠ or Q♠ + 7♥R or 6♦R = a schemer plotting something

When the J♠ or Q♠ come up reversed in a reading it can be down to three main reasons: the person is even worse; the person is just the stupid kind of bad, not a mustache-twirling murderer plotting their next dastardly deed; the enemy is in difficulty/is losing his or her battle against the querent. This, of course, depends on the surrounding cards. Traditionally (but by no means always) J♠R is in difficulty and Q♠R is worse. Sometimes it doesn’t make much of a difference.

2♦ or J♦ + K♠ = communication of the authority, neutral (if K♠R, negative)
K♠ + 4♥ = among other things, a love that has lost its spark but is mature and based in faithfulness
K♠ + 7♥ = can be a professional working in the legal or paralegal field
K♠ + 4♠ = specialist doctor treating the illness
3♦ + K♠ = favor or “gift” or money granted by the authority
K♠ + 9♥ = it represents faithfulness in marriage in general, or a positive judge


K♠ + 10♥ = success in public things or winning a court case
7♦ + 6♠ + J♦ + K♠ + 2♣ or 5♣ or 9♣ or 3♦R = adoption granted after a while
K♠ + 6♥R = the authority is stingy, won’t grant you money
K♠ + 8♥ = faith, a priest, in the right context
K♠ + 4♠R = can be a church or bureaucratic blockages

K♦R (+ 9♠ or 4♠U/R) + K♠ + 6♣ = being on govt benefits, getting unemployment
K♠R + K♥R = an unjust judge, a misanthrope, someone who hurts or abuses people, dangerous man, or a bad man with legal problems
A♣U/R + K♠R = a divorce or the legal dissolution of a partnership
K♠R + K♦R = can be an illegal scheme
K♠R + 2♣R + 3♠R = evil magician
K♠R + 8♥R = lack of faith, atheism or a distorted view of faith

Q♥R + A♣R = same for a woman (note, this interpretation would be confirmed by the A♦, otherwise other interpretations could be possible)
Q♥ + J♣ = a woman and her son or younger lover, but since he’s a ♣, it’s unlikely to last forever (same with J♥ and Q♣)
J♥ + J♣ = brothers, cousins, friends or a gay couple (in this case the suit is not important)

K♥R + 8♠ = a jealous husband, not the nice kind (+7♠, run for your life, if 7♠R, you are probably not even running away)
K♥R + 10♣ + 6♥U/R = a squanderer
K♥R + 10♣R + 9♣R = a gambler (and a bad one)

Club Court Cards

J♣ + K♣ = usually, a boss and a subordinate, but it could also mean a young boss, it can also mean a young person and an unloving father (in this case, Q♣ would be a daughter)
J♣ or Q♣ + Q♦ = normally a mother and her son or daughter, sometimes a “milf” and her younger lover (male or female). Same with K♥ as “dilf”
J♣ + 4♥ = a young man in love (in this case, even though he is a ♣, and would therefore not do as a lasting partner, he absorbs the qualities of the surrounding card. This is true of most Face cards)
J♣ + Q♣ = brother and sister, cousins, young boyfriend and girlfriend (usually their showing up as ♣s means they will sooner or later break up)

J♣ + 2♦ + 6♦ = a student
J♣ or Q♣ + 7♦ = young boy or girl, but they may be teen parents as well depending on the context
J♣ or Q♣ + 9♥ or 10♥ = trustworthy young people
J♣ + 10♠ = a young man in uniform, or a hot hunky young man
Q♣ + 2♣ = a beautiful young woman, a female deity (traditionally, the Virgin Mary)
J♣ + 4♦ = one whose helps come with strings attached


Q♣ + 4♦ = could be the same, but more usually it could show a deluded deluded woman, sometimes a liar
Q♣ + 4♣ = girl friends
Q♣ + 8♦ = can be two colleagues or a young woman in uniform
Q♣ or J♣ + 2♠ or 3♠ = nephew/niece/grandson/granddaughter and granny or grandpa or older uncle/aunt
Q♣ or J♣ + A♣ = young married person or young business partner


J♣R + K♣R = traditionally, a duo of depraved individuals
J♣R + 9♥ = avoid accepting his help
J♣R + 4♥R = may be a young male escort
J♣R + 6♥R = a thief or a young man with holes in his pockets
J♣R + 4♣R = be weary of accepting his help
10♠ + J♣R + 9♠ = a young criminal being apprehended


J♣R + 2♥R = a can be a troubled teen with a difficult home life, but if also 9♠, might be a juvenile detention center
Q♣R + 4♥ = a young woman who suffer for love
Q♣R + 8♦R = a stupid bimbo
Q♣R + 4♠ or 8♣R or 8♥R = depression
Q♣R + 4♦ = a young woman who view of reality is completely skewed
Q♣R + 6♠R = a young woman with mood swings or mood swings in general

Q♣R + 7♠ = a negative, irrational young woman
K♣ + K♥ = a good doctor or professional
2♦ + K♣ = a diagnosis or professional’s document to be understood in context
K♣ + 2♠ = geriatrician or a older female doctor or boss


K♣ + 4♦ = wrong advice or a cardiologist
K♣ + 4♠ + 7♠ = surgeon, surgery
K♣ + A♥ = a consultant of some kind
K♣ + 7♦ = a pediatrician
K♣ + K♥ or Q♥ = an andrologist or gynecologist
K♣ + 9♦ = allergist, lungs doctor, a psychiatrist, depending on the other cards


K♣ + K♦ = boss
K♣ + 2♣ = a man of enormous power | a professional who will solve your issue, a great doctor
K♣ + 10♠ = a higher up in the military
K♣R + 10♦ = a thief, but usually a powerful one, not a street thug
K♣R + 6♥R = loan shark


K♣R + J♠ + 9♦ = can be a mobster
2♦ + K♣R = wrong diagnosis, seek second opinion
K♣R + A♠ + 4♠ = traditionally, a doctor or surgeon making a mistake that leaves you with visible scars or problems
K♣R + 2♥R + 7♠R = a violent, oppressive father (if Q♦ it would be the mother, of course)
K♣R + K♦ = a negative boss at work

Special Note 1: often it’s indifferent whether the Face card comes upright together with a reversed card or it comes reversed with an upright card, the meaning is sometimes the same, especially when the reversed meaning of the card is the opposite of it’s upright meaning (like with the 9♥)

Special Note 2: I can’t stess enough that these are just examples and that every spread must be judged as its own thing. The context of the question and the other cards must be taken into account when choosing the right interpretation.


Face + A♥ = person talks, expresses himself/herself, is open, other-oriented, belongs to the closer circle of people around the querent
Face + A♥R = person doesn’t talk, inexpressive, cannot express himself or herself well, there is a sense of incompleteness in the relationship with him/her, there are arguments, the person is changing
Face + 2♥ = person belongs to the house or family or the house belong to them
Face + 2♥R = person lives in a house he or she hates, or must visit a “negative” place, or causes the atmosphere at home to be difficult

Face + 3♥* = person is looking, searching, things are coming for that person
3♥ + Face* = person is arriving
Face + 3♥R = person is choleric and animalistic
Face + 4♥ = in love
Face + 4♥R = not in love, gay (usually hiding it), not emotionally fulfilled
Face + 5♥ = is a relative, is engaged, is helpful to the querent in getting his or her wish
Face + 5♥R = cheater, a negative relative, stands between the querent and his or her wish


Face + 6♥ = wealthy or has married money (especially if a queen, traditionally), a person belonging to the past
Face + 6♥R = person has problems with money, won’t give you money, is stingy, is not known yet (belongs to the future) or only known vaguely
Face + 7♥ = person is gifted, talented, serious, bookish, has an intellectual job, is deskbound, achieves recognition within the context, with other cards may be a sexual deviant
Face + 7♥R = person is machiavellian, calculating, untalented or not good for the task, lacking recognition
Face + 8♥* = person is hopeful, positive, nurturing, has hopes (see following cards), spiritual
8♥ + Face* = hopes concern this person

Face + 5♣U/R = person is lucky or brings luck, it’s not the person’s fault


Face + 6♣* = person finds out unexpectedly, receives, gains, thrives, flourishes with little effort
6♣ + Face* = unexpectedly meeting the person (sometimes it’s got the same meaning as the opposite combination, though. Be flexible)
Face + 6♣R = person is ambitious, usually too ambitious, doesn’t thrive, doesn’t receive
Face + 7♣ = person is secure, successful, realized, honored, belongs to the querent’s work environment
Face + 7♣R = person is uncertain, fearful, humiliated

Face + 8♣ = person is well-disposed toward something or someone or the querent, ready to compromise, we meet with him/her, can be a group of people with the Face’s qualities

Face + 9♦ = person is unreliable, mistaken, not to be believed, cause of trouble, it can refer to a negative group of people with the Face card’s qualities
Face + 9♦R = person is sorely mistaken, is worsening, is taking back something, is hesitant, is blundering
Face + 10♦ = person is a thief, real or within the context, a cheat, interfering, a bad person, a betrayer
Face + 10♦R = person is ruined, is the cause of unsurmountable problems, doesn’t give back what has taken

Face + 2♠R = person is false, a spreader of discord, hopelessly obsolete, hasn’t learned a thing in life, is avaricious, doesn’t share
Face + 3♠ = person is alone, is going away, querent is deprived of the person in some way, suffers a loss, is lost
Face + 3♠R = person has suffered a trauma, is entirely broken, is following a dangerous path, is making or has made a mistake, has a wrong conduct, is abused or has abused

Face + 4♠ = person is sick, is feeling down, is alone or unemployed, has morbid behavior, must take a break from regular life
Face + 4♠R = person is blocked, can’t move, won’t move or budge, is unwilling to help, is good at managing resources (with positive cards), is hokey smokey poor (with bad cards), is religious
Face + 5♠ = person is dead, is causing or going through a break or huge change, is causing a lack of balance in the situation, is dangerous, is in danger
Face + 5♠R = person is deeply sorry, is devastated, is mortified, is mortally afraid, with positive cards, though, the person has the resources to go on in life


Face + 6♠* = querent is worried about the person
6♠ + Face* = person is worried about something, is unable to let go of something, is deeply anxious about something
Face + 6♠R = person is moving on, is seeing the light, listening to reason, looking for advice or giving it, is finally able to accept something, is given the facts about a situation, is going through instability or causing it, with deeply negative cards the person is without scruples
Face + 7♠ = person is dangerous, negative, aggressive, is disruptive of the querent’s wishes or their wish is being disrupted
Face + 7♠R = person is crushed and unable to get back to his or her feet, is oppressed, a prisoner, person is an oppressor, with negative cards even a  psychopath
Face + 8♠= person is in a crisis, is losing money, is in a bad way, is subtly evil, jealous, envious, bears ill-will toward the querent
