Laetitia / Happiness (Geomancy Figures)

Name of the Figure: Laetitia (Happiness), sometimes called “Bearded”
Element: Air
Planet: Jupiter (direct, though some say retrograde)
Sign: Taurus
Quality: Exiting
Fortune: Good (in most questions)

Laetitia is another “pure element” figure, if we accept the theory that signle dots represent active element. In this case, only the fire line should be active. It is a figure of Jupiter, the planet of happiness, nobility, religion and wealth. By its own design, Laetitia is often likened to a tower or to an upward pointing arrow.

Illustration of the geomantic figure Laetitia, happiness

Although the wealth aspect of Jupiter is definitely represented by Laetitia, it falls more under the domain of Acquisitio, the other Jupiter figure. Laetitia highlights more the psychological aspect of being glad, being happy, feasting, etc. which are all aspects of Jupiter. It represents everything that is “high” in a positive sense: high spirits, high-mindedness, honor, increase, growth, etc.

Laetitia is one of the few positive exiting figures, as opposed to Tristitia, which is one of the few negative incoming figures. Laetitia indicates partying and being happy, but it can also show fleeting situations, if not accompanied by more stable figures.

It is also a figure of visibility. It is therefore excellent for finding out secrets, discovering, finding lost items, etc. On the other hand, it is very bad for keeping things secret and under wraps. For instance, if someone asked if their spouse will find out about their affair, Laetitia is not an encouraging sign.

One aspect that is not often emphasized about Laetitia is that it is connected being being “bearded”. A beard, aside from indicating manliness, was also traditionally a sign of wisdom, and wisdom is one of the attributes of Jupiter, especially as it pertains conventional wisdom (e.g., the wisdom of a priest or a mentor or benefactor, as opposed to Mercury’s cunning and technological know-how and Saturn’s occult depth). It can therefore indicate “growing” in the sense of acquiring wisdom, becoming adult, either literally or figuratively

Common Keywords: Joy, merriment, happiness, feasts, parties, things that raise your spirits, up, upward, ceiling, growth, increase, visibility, fame, recognition, being seen, being busted, unearthing, lack of durability, fleeting success, wisdom, maturity

Amissio / Loss (Geomancy Figures)

Name of the Figure: Amissio (Loss)
Element: Fire
Planet: Venus (retrograde)
Sign: Libra
Quality: Exiting
Fortune: Bad

Amissio is another rather straightforward figure, with a caveat that I will address at the end. It is the opposite of Acquisitio, and its symbol shows it, as it seems to depict a bag with its mouth held downward, signifying loss. Tradition assigns this figure to Venus retrograde, meaning that while it is bad in most things, some see it as good in love affairs.

Illustration for the geomantic figure Amissio, Loss

Mainly, Amissio is a figure of loss, especially financial or material loss. It is also often associated with losing items or having them stolen from you. Needless to say, it is bad in any situations where we hope for increase, gain and the like. It is good in situations where you want to lose something, such as weight, illness, prison sentences, etc. Some say that Amissio is good for love because in love you “lose yourself” in the other.

Frankly, I believe we need to be very cautious with this line of reasoning, as it can be played with and made to say whatever we want. “Will I find a job?” “Why, yes! Here it says you will lose your lack of employment!” Furthermore, even in matters of love I have personally found that there are better figures to represent love (Puella) elation (Laetitia), ardor (Puer) or commitment (Conjunctio). I have the sneaking suspiscion that the only reason the Medievals assigned Amissio to Venus was that Saturn already had two figures to its name and nothing else was available, so always take the attributions with a grain of salt. The main meaning is loss, plain and simple.

Common Keywords: Loss, Difficulties, Hardships, Theft, Healing, Liberation, Letting go, Falling in love

Describing Court Cards, Part 1 / Cartomancy with Playing Cards

In many card reading systems, the appearance of a court cart is enough to make the reader panic. This is partly because there is no fudging with real people: they are there in flesh and blood, so if you botch the interpretation, it’s gonna show.

It’s hard to place people cards in the querent’s life. But there are some tricks that can help us. These are rules of thumb, and need to be applied flexibley. Be sensible and reasonable. If something doesn’t make sense for whatever reason, don’t say it: if it doesn’t make sense in divination it doesn’t make sense in real life, and vice versa. Leave space for some intuition as well.

In general, we know that the Club court cards represent the two querents. In general, the Club court card of the opposite sex represents the significant other for straight querents (for gay querents it’s the Heart court card of the same sex, while the other Club card becomes an important figure who is close to the querent or will have an important role)

Often, Heart cards represent people the querent already knows as they have a close bond with them, shown by the Heart suit. However, if the cards surrounding them show newsness or being unknown, then the Heart suit represents that they are good to the querent.

Diamond and Spade figures may or may not be known. If they are surrounded by Hearts, they are more likely to have a close relationship with the querent, although Spades surrounded by Hearts still show a problematic relationship. Surrounding Clubs suggest a more distant relationship, while Diamonds and Spades suggest the relationship is purely transactional or even hostile (in the case of Spades.)

When two court cards show up next to each other, they are related in some way. Related doesn’t necessarily mean that they are relatives, but that they know each other and have already interacted in the past. When the two cards come up with some other cards between them, we need to pay attention to the cards that separate them. If these separating cards describe a type of relationship, they simply describe their interaction. if they describe happenings, then it may be that the two people don’t know each other yet.

A court card next to the Ace of Hearts is usually a member of the household. A court card next to the Two of Hearts is usually a relative, but usually not a sibling or parent. Obviously, a court card next to the Eight of Clubs is a colleague, and so on.

Here’s an example. The acquaintance of a friend asked me once if she would find a new boyfriend. I knew nothing about her.

K♣ – 6♣ – Q♣ – 5♠ – 10♠ – 2♦ – J♥

It is patently clear that this person is already in a committed relationship: the King of Clubs shows up at the beginning. He and the Queen do not interact directly, because their court cards don’t touch. However, the card that separates them, the Six of Clubs, represents the type of relationship they have: a tired one. This makes the Queen feel confined and unwell (Five of Spades) which leads her to sending secret flirty messages (Ten of Spades, Two of Diamonds, Jack of Hearts) probably over the internet. This spread does not show new relationships, it just shows that the querent is already in a relationship.

Acquisitio / Gain (Geomancy Figures)

Name of the Figure: Acquisitio (Gain)
Element: Air
Planet: Jupiter (direct, but some say retrograde)
Sign: Aries
Quality: Entering
Fortune: Good

Acquisitio is a rather straightforward figure, definitely one of the easiest to decipher. Its glyph is reminescent of a bag with its mouth held open as to signify gain, which is the literal translation of the Latin name. It is associated with Jupiter, which in traditional astrology was associated not just with wealth and abundance but also with higher and loftier things in life. All this is the domain of the other Jupiter figure, Laetitia. Acquisitio is a more material symbol.

Illustration for the geomantic figure Acquisitio, gain

Mainly, Acquisitio means what it says on the tin: acquisition, gain, money. It is strongly connected with material wealth and money in particular. It’s a good figure for finances and for acquiring objects, as well as for luxury. It can indicate finding a job, getting a raise and generally not needing to worry about the future. If the question is whether you will find a lost item or a thief will be caught, the answer is a resounding yes.

In non-material questions, such as love, affection, etc., Acquisitio can show attachment and honest relationships (it is still a figure of Jupiter) however if the chart veers toward the negative it can indicate possessiveness and, more broadly, the inability to let go. Alternatively, it can show a somewhat transactional mindset.

A rather notorious effect of Acquisitio is that its ability to gain us things can turn it into a bad figure whenever there is something we would like to lose. It represents catching illnesses or, more generally, it shows the inability to heal from them. Also, it can indicate that a prisoner’s sentence won’t be short (he will gain a lot of it)

Common Keywords: Gain, money, liquid assets, obtaining, receiving, getting back, wealth, inability to let go, inability to separate from someone or something (including illness or incarceration)

HousePossible Meanings

Rubeus / Red (Geomancy Figures)

Name of the Figure: Rubeus (Red)
Element: Fire
Planet: Mars (retrograde)
Sign: Gemini
Quality: Exiting
Fortune: Bad

Rubeus is so infamous that sometimes even those who know nothing of Geomancy have heard of it. The common instruction that has been passed down to us from our medieval forebears is that if Rubeus occupies the First Mother, then we ought to “break the figure” and start anew, possibly after waiting some time. But then again, this should also be true for Cauda Draconis and, if I don’t misremember, according to some even for Populus, meaning that you basically never get to do divination if you follow these rules. The general idea is that, since the first figure represents the querent, and Rubeus represents danger, you don’t want a dangerous querent. However, this is a rather limiting view.

An illustration for the geomantic figure Rubeus, red
(I know it should look more threatening, but I thought this was too adorable not to share it)

Rubeus is the only figure with only the Air line “active”, if we buy into the “one point = active” theory. Air was traditionally seen in many premodern European accounts as the middleman between Fire and Water, due to sharing Fire’s heat and Water’s moisture. However, exactly because it is the middleman, Air requires direction from outside of itself. But here Air is left to its own devices, so what it does is expand chaotically. This also justifies the attribution to Mars, which is an excessive planet. Symbolically, the figure represents an uptruned chalice or goblet.

Note that heat represents the ability to shape things, while moisture is the ability to receive shape. Therefore, pure Air in Rubeus represents its receiving every impulse and acting immediately on it. This is pretty much the gist of Rubeus: it represents chaos, disorder, lack of restraint. Rubeus is a figure mad with passion, leading a sinful life, running after whatever catches its fancy without a second’s hesitation. It represents people you should not trust, who are either unwell or unhinged. Sometimes, they are simply unable to see the full picture because their mind is clouded.

Rubeus is traditionally described as “good in all things bad” which is quite the statement. If you want to take away someone’s spouse, Rubeus is good. If you want to experiment with drugs, Rubeus is good. If you want to steal, murder, pirate, attack, cause suffering, Rubeus is good. Good means you’ll be able to do it, it doesn’t mean the outcome will be pleasing.

Common Keywords: Excess, Lying, Deceit, Lack of guidance, Lack of principles, Great confusion, Sin, Mad passion, Blood, Imbalance, Chaos, Loss, Danger, Evil, Devilry, Black magic, Untrustworthy

The Microcosmicon – Introduction and Index

Back to the Fiction Index

Introduction

Much has been said in academic circles concerning the origins of this book, but the truth is quite simple.

Anciently, people used to be able to derive answers to their questions directly from the Macrocosmicon, the book of life. But this ability was lost, so the Kanj of Nebol ordered 1000 stories gathered from around the universe to serve as oracle.

Originally, to answer a question, 1000 eunuchs were left on Scorpion Island for 42 days, after which the story was read and interpreted that corresponded to their remaining number.

Today, a simple randomly generated number is used for practicality.

People have the Power | Cartomancy with Playing Cards

Court cards are scary, because they don’t seem to have a logical meaning, or at least not a prominent one. Instead, they represent people, and this can be inconvenient, because people exist in the real world and need to be described more or less accurately for the reading to be useful. This can be very difficult.

Queens and Kings are more likely to represent people and less likely to represent concepts, although on occasion they might. The K♣ and Q♣ are the two querent cards, and only in the rarest occasion do they stand for anything other than that.

A general rule of cartomancy (not just with playing cards) is that action happens in the spread. Who is not in the spread does not act. This can take on a variety of meanings, but most commonly what it means is that, for instance, if the querent doesn’t show up, they are relatively passive, and it is going to be harder for them to change the situation.

A natural corollary to this is the fact that if a person does show up in the spread, they influence the situation directly. Example: a female querent once asked me if she would find a job. The cards were:

10♠ – Q♥ – 7♥

The querent is not represented in the spread. This doesn’t mean that she wasn’t actively looking for a job (she was). It just means that her looking for one won’t solve the problem. Instead, out of nowhere (10♠) a woman will provide the solution in an unexpected way. What happened was that an aunt who lived far from home and didn’t even know the niece was looking for a job phoned and she happened to mention that there was an opening in the company she worked at that she needed to fill. Once she discovered the niece was looking for a job she helped her get the job.

Another example. A friend of mine once asked if the relationship that had just ended would resume (he had been left)

K♣ – 5♣ – A♦

An accumulation of Clubs is not good when asking about reconciliations. Here, the querent’s significator is shown acting (Five of Clubs) to start something new (Ace of Diamonds.) A week later he met a new girl and he (successfully) went after her. Here, despite the question, it is clear that the previous girl is completely out of the picture and cannot influence the events, so much so that later on she tried to reconnect with him (obviously, when she noticed that he was taken) but the spread showed that he was the one wielding power within the situation and was committed to the new.

Puella / Girl (Geomancy Figures)

Name of the Figure: Puella (The Girl)
Element: Water
Planet: Venus (direct)
Sign: Libra (Sometimes given as Aries)
Quality: Entering
Fortune: Good (with neutral undertones)

Puella is the counterpart to Puer, the boy, and the opposite figure of Rubeus (if you push Puella through Via you get Rubeus, not Puer). It is a figure of Venus direct. Just as Venus is the lesser fortune in astrology, Puella is a positive figure, but not very strong. Its testimony is easily overruled by other consideration. Its figure has two points in the Air line. This fact has been interpreted variously in modern literature. From a visual standpoint, this is said to represent a mirror or a woman’s breasts.

Illustration of the geomantic figure Puella, girl

Puella represents a girl’s or woman’s influence in the querent’s life. In this sense, the figure is neutral, and its meaning must be clarified by the rest of the chart. It also represents things we traditionally associated with women. This ranges from objects typically used by women (mirrors, lipsticks, gowns, etc.) to a feminine attitude and feminine interests.

Obviously, given its association with Venus and with womanhood, Puella has to do with love, harmony, balance, in all their applications. For instance, Puella tends to bring affection, love, togetherness. It is a good figure for interpersonal relationship, as it shows tactfulness, although it can signify someone who is easily influenced. It also has a connection with the arts, just like Venus. Everything that is pleasing to the eye falls under its jurisdiction.

Another idea connected with Puella is that of innocence. This can be played with if it is relevant to the question. Finally, Puella can represent an inability to assert oneself. If found in an unfavorable position, it can point to laziness and wastful behavior.

Common Keywords: A girl or a woman, female things (gowns, stockings, lipsticks, etc.) beauty, art, creativity, gentleness, harmony, girlish, unstable, submissive, (re)conciliation, love, feelings, easily swayed or overwhelmed, broadly positive outcome but with instability

Weather Forecasts with the I Ching

Wen Wang Gua is such a fun oracle. It is rather cerebral in its functioning, not unlike horary astrology, but it is incredibly accurate. In fact, I think the I Ching (in its Wen Wang Gua or Plum Blossom forms) is to Chinese Astrology what horary astrology is to Western astrology. There are some limitations to the analogy, but it is a good one, as far as it goes.

Some days ago, I asked the I Ching when it would rain, just for kicks. Being the end of August, some rain wouldn’t be bad.

Subject: Here
Object: the Weather
Focus: Parents line (represents rain, because it is life-giving)

“When will it rain?” answered with Wen Wang Gua (I Ching). Software used: Four Pillars & Feng Shui

Parents hold the Object line with Shen (Monkey, metal.) It also holds the Month branch, therefore not only is it vibrant: it is also useful. But it doesn’t move. Furthermore, the Subject, Wealth Snake, moves to restrict it, and while it is untimely at the Month branch, it is supported by being at the Day branch which is also Snake (although Metal is born at Snake). The Day Branch holds the Parents up in a combination. It is a very uncertain picture, and indeed we’ve been having a very changeable weather, with clouds and sun, but not rain. It is complicated by the fact that this is a six-combination Hexagram, which doesn’t favor change.

But the situation should change on Goat day, that is, in two days, when the Goat Wei clashes the void Ox line from void to compact to drain away the restricting Snake energy and generate the Parents line. It is more likely to rain in Wei or Shen hours (1pm-5pm). However it probably won’t last very long as the resulting Hexagram is an all-clash.

(Note: these are my notes on the reading taken on the day of the reading)

Flashforward to two days later

I asked again. This time the question was if it would rain that day

“Will it rain today?” answered with Wen Wang Gua (I Ching) Software used: Four Pillars & Feng Shui

The Hexagram is still. Technically this would mean that there are no changes, but this is not necessarily the case, as change can happen in many ways. For instance, in this case we have the Parents line still represented by the Monkey Shen at Subject and, again, at the Month Branch, while the Object is void, which usually is said to indicate unpredictable weather. Voids prelude to change. In this case, Goat at the Day Branch clashes the Ox from void to compact to generate the Monkey. It will probably rain in Goat or Monkey hours.

Result: it rained in Monkey hour, at 15:30, but it lasted less than an hour, as predicted by the six clash Gua. I’m wondering if there is something I was missing that would have allowed me to narrow down the hour to just Monkey and not Goat in the prediction.

Albus / White (Geomancy Figures)

Name of the Figure: Albus (White)
Element: Water
Planet: Mercury (direct)
Sign: Cancer
Quality: Common
Fortune: Mixed (mostly good)

Albus is a figure of Mercury. It is formed by three couples of points plus a single point in the Water line. If we take odd points to mean the element is active, then Water is the only active element here, with nothing else to stirr it. Therefore, one could take it to symbolize the calm waters of the stilled mind. Also, it is customary to see the shape of an upright cup or goblet in the elemental configuration of Albus. This could link it further to the idea of holding in your thoughts and energies and let them decant.

Illustration of the geomantic figure Albus

Broadly, especially in a more modern interpretation, Albus is often linked to wisdom, knowledge and reflection. It represents the intelligence-aspect of Mercury, and after all, one of the many traditional images of Mercury or Hermes was of an old man. It can stand for all situations where the querent (or someone else) reflects or studies or plans a lot. Nothing will be rushed and instincts are not to be followed without first thinking about what we are doing.

Other common associations of Mercury also come to the fore. Albus is said to be a very good figure for commerce and wealth. Broadly it could show investments. Furthermore, it is obviously a figure of communication, and can therefore be linked to messages, letters, phone calls, etc. It also rules books and sciences.

The idea of whiteness can also indicate purity, honesty (which is not always a given with Mercury) and chastity. Some old manuscripts also link it to women and to old people, possibly due to this connection with chastity which was supposed to be the virtue of (especially) women and the destiny of old people. I’m more inclined to see the connection with old people than with women.

Common Keywords: Old people, wisdom, maturity or maturation, study, learning, communication, knowledge, reflection, meditation, medicine, healing, purity, honesty, water
